    The is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services.

    Position Duties

    The total salary range(s) for Engineer I/II classification(s) are:Engineer I:

    $95, $121,190.16

    Engineer II:
    $108, $137,482.80

    This salary range(s) includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates' qualifications and experience.


    The Department of Public Works is currently seeking to fill multiple full-time Engineer I/II vacancies of different disciplines that may be assigned to work in the various divisions of the department including Transportation and Hydraulic Services (THS) or Development Services (DS).


    Transportation and Hydraulic Services DivisionThe Transportation and Hydraulics Services Division is responsible for the design, construction, and master plan of bridges, culverts, streets, sidewalks, storm and sanitary sewers, pump stations, streetlights, landscape and hardscape improvements, traffic signals, and supports construction and engineering, upgrade and revitalization of the San Jose-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility.

    In addition, this division provides general engineering plan review for general projects and electrical engineering review for projects constructed by private developers.


    Development Services DivisionThe Development Services Division provides development plan review and construction of City infrastructure in conjunction with the private development process, administers permits for work within City's streets, and provides utilities services.


    Airport Capital Improvements ProgramThe Airport Division Capital Improvements team is responsible for the project management and delivery of capital projects related to San Jose Mineta International Airport.


    City Facilities Architectural Services DivisionCFAS Division has the primary responsibility for the delivery of capital improvements projects on City properties and provides design and construction services for public buildings, landscape improvements, and capital maintenance projects, including recreational facilities, parks, trails, libraries, public safety facilities, and various cultural facilities.


    Engineering Services DivisionThe Engineering Services Division is comprised of four sections: Construction Management Services, Structural Engineering and Code Inspection, Material Testing Laboratory, and Survey.

    This division provides technical support services to City Capital Improvement Programs and Projects, development/utility permit projects, and other citywide customers.

    The ideal candidates will possess a high level of professionalism, excellent customer service skills, and supreme work ethic. The position requires excellent judgement, initiative, perseverance, integrity, organizational skills, flexibility, and written and verbal communication skills.

    Under the direction of an Associate Engineer, these candidates may perform the following key responsibilities:

    Key Responsibilities

    (Dependent upon the position/discipline for which they may be selected.)Develop, review, and interpret plans and specifications for conformance to established standards for major City projectsPrepare resource and/or cost estimatesPerform field investigationPrepare and administer consultant agreementsSupervise, schedule, assign and direct activities for Inspectors and/or Engineering Technicians, Student Interns, andEngineering TraineesReview and make recommendations concerning proposed projects and resolve disputes between contractors, inspectors,developers, utilities, and consultantsWork collaboratively in a group or team environment and communicate clearly and effectivelyPrepare a variety of correspondences and reportsUtilize various computer programs to analyze data and produce presentationsGenerate and maintain project information in the City's database systemAbility to perform CAD drafting using AutoCAD or MicroStationReview storm pump station circuit and motor control diagramsReview engineering to support pump station upgrades, force mains and miscellaneous structuresReview designs, improvement plans, estimates, specifications, and contract documents for capital improvements projectsAssists in CEQA and other permits processProcess invoices/pay letters, change orders and submittalsPerform complex calculations and data management tasks using MS ExcelCoordinate with contractors and/or other City departments to plan and develop City projectsPerform a range of work in the field of design, project management or construction project managementAssist in the revision of City of San José standard plans and specifications as neededInteract, coordinate, and provide customer service to engineers, inspectors, consultants, contractors, local agencies, citizengroups, general public, and other City DepartmentsUse EADOC construction management software for managing the documentation of capital improvement projectsThis recruitment may be used to fill multiple positions in this, or other divisions or departments.

    Minimum Qualifications


    Education:
    Engineer I:

    A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in the required professional engineering designation or possession of an Engineering-In-Training (EIT) certificate


    Engineer II:


    A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in the required professional engineering designation or possession of an Engineering-In-Training (EIT) certificate AND one (1) year of increasingly responsible professional engineeringexperience reviewing and preparing plans, estimates, and specifications.


    Acceptable Substitutions:


    Certificate of successful completion of the Engineer-In-Training examination issued by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists may be substituted for the required education.


    Licenses :
    Possession of a valid State of California driver's license may be required

    Certifications:
    Possession of a Certificate of Registration in the required engineering discipline is desirable.
