    Job Description

    The Research Program Director is responsible for administrative, operational and business oversight of research projects within the Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPN) program. Collaborates with and oversees Principal Investigators (P.I.) of a global research initiative in novel, patient oriented research. Reviews preparation of grants, negotiations of clinical trial agreements; integrates laboratory and clinical aspects of projects; creates and implements budgets; drafts agreements with external institutions; oversees staffing and related human resources activity.

    Responsibilities

    Collaborates with members of the MPN consortium and other academic groups in program development, consultation, and the planning and delivery of optimal unit operations.
    • Responsible for creating and global annual MPN budgets and monitoring expenses
    • Analyzes monthly grant activity, monitors grant spending reports and expenditures posted to assigned grant projects and serves as a liaison to GCO office, sponsored projects and other collaborating departments to ensure that grants are properly managed.
    Establishes goals and objectives for all ongoing research projects, consistent with Mount Sinai Health System policies as well as Federal, State and local regulations.
    • Runs reports as needed by Divisional and Institute business office
    • May create and distribute funding opportunities packets, calendars and special alerts.
    Oversees the preparation of grants and IRB paperwork, financial activity and contracts.
    • Works with PIs and related services to develop budget for individual projects
    • Collaborates and communicates with external agencies, sponsors, and institutions
    • Provides assistance and guidance in the preparation of budgets, GCO/IRB paperwork, application forms, no costs extensions and subcontracts.
    • Monitors project to alert post-awards team when invoiceable event or milestone is achieved, or if project is ready for closeout
    • Reviews and provides supplemental and amended information to extramural sponsors on grant applications.
    • Reviews grants and contracts proposals and expenditures prior to submissions for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, and regulations.
    • Collects and maintains related data in agreements database
    • Maintains a library of bio-sketches, other support, and training records for grant proposals.
    • Ensures that grants and contracts applications are submitted and routed to the appropriate committee (Institutional Animal Care and
    • Use Committee, Institutional Review Board, Bio-Safety Officer and Financial Conflict of Interest in Research Committee).
    Facilitates timely and responsive communication and proactive responsible decision making.
    • Maintains computer documentation and appropriate files for proposal submissions, awards, and research expenditures including payments to collaborators for work performed including per-patient reimbursements.
    • Acts as a liaison with departmental administrators, faculty and extramural funding agencies (federal, state, local and non-profit organizations) to endorse any edits to the proposals prior to institutional endorsement.
    • Flags and refers project over to regulatory bodies when needed
    • Acts as a liaison with the Institutional Bio-Safety Officer, Biomedical Research Alliance of New York and Committee on Special Awards and Fellowships.
    May arrange for the availability of human and material resources to facilitate positive outcomes for ongoing research projects.
    • Works with directors, sponsors, collaborating academic centers and consortia, GCO, and MSIP to shepherd agreements (such as contracts, clinical trial riders, material transfer agreements) through completion and execution of agreements
    • Manages new correlative and translational agreements
    • Works with Divisional grants team and Sponsored Projects to open project account
    Participates in the development and implementation of ongoing quality improvement activities as per policies and protocols.
    • Acts as a liaison with departmental administrators and clinical unit leaders to implement and harmonize clinical processes that will facilitate alignment of personnel to research objectives while improving consistency of clinical care.
    May participate in the identification and response to potential and actual risk management issues.

    Responsible for human resources, includes of recruitment, hiring, evaluating, retention, discipline and termination.
    • Helps create and implement strategies to find, reward and retain highly skilled research personnel
    • Reviews MPN staff evaluations annually and helps implement organizational improvements
    Develops and maintains systems which support efficient and effective functioning of designated research areas.
    • Fosters teamwork among all MPN staff (laboratory and clinical)
    Performs other related duties.
    • Manages other related special projects as required
    Qualifications
    • Bachelors degree, Masters strongly preferred, in sciences or related degree
    • 7 years experience in a hospital/medical environment
    • 3 years supervisory
    • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
    • Ability to find creative solutions to organizational problems and barriers
    • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
    • Ability to motivate, develop and coach individuals
    • Experience in managing and financial management
