    Job Description and Duties

    DSH-Patton Human Resources Department is accepting applications for multiple Permanent, Intermittent appointments to the Psychiatric Technician classification in Registry.

    The Permanent Intermittent Psychiatric Technicians are under the direct supervision of the Central Staffing Office Unit Supervisor and the general supervision of the Program/Unit of their assignment.


    Psychiatric Technicians work to maintain order and supervise the conduct of clients/patients, to protect and maintain the safety of persons and property; to provide a basic level of general behavioral psychiatric nursing care to clients/patients who are mentally disordered offenders; and to participate in the overall psychiatric treatment program.

    In addition to their custody responsibilities, incumbents provide a basic level of general behavioral and psychiatric nursing care and are expected through their attitude, knowledge, and performance to facilitate the rehabilitation of clients/patients.


    Successful candidates should possess the ability to learn and apply sound judgment, including in emergency situations, for the protection of persons and property apply basic nursing knowledge, skills and attitudes; establish effective therapeutic relationships with mentally disordered clients/patients; recognize symptoms requiring medical or psychiatric attention; think and act quickly in emergencies; work with a treatment team to provide occupational, recreational, vocational, and educational therapy programs for clients/patients; follow directions; keep appropriate records; develop clear and concise reports of incidents; analyze situations accurately and take effective action.

    Permanent Intermittent Psychiatric Technicians scheduling is maintained and controlled by the Central Staffing Office. Permanent Intermittent employees are required to work a minimum of 96 hours per month. 48 hours must be scheduled during the weekend. All newly hired Permanent Intermittent Psychiatric Technicians will be placed on primary shifts. Newly hired Permanent Intermittent Psychiatric Technicians will be placed on the PM or NOC shift. The 96-hour monthly minimum must be worked on the assigned primary shifts.

    Shifts and dates available for Permanent Intermittent Psychiatric Technicians to work each month are opened and identified by the Central Staffing Office monthly.

    The open shifts change from month to month based on hospital staffing needs. Those specific dates and shifts will be the only times that can be scheduled for work. Successful candidates will be orientated to the Internal Registry Rules in detail by the Central Staffing Office.

    Working Conditions

    Patton is a forensic psychiatric hospital and was established in 1890 and opened in 1893. DSH-Patton provides treatment to forensically and civilly committed patients within a secure treatment area. The hospital does not accept voluntary admissions.
