    Job Description and Duties


    Patton State Hospital, Human Resources Department is accepting applications for at least one (1) Limited Term, Full-Time appointment to the Office Technician (Typing) classification in the Health Information Management Department (HIMD).

    This position is under the direction of the Health Record Technician Ill Supervisor and general supervision of the HIMD Director.


    The incumbent transcribes dictation from digital dictation system and maintains electronic log of transcribed reports, according to established formats; proofreads transcribed reports for accuracy and makes corrections and changes as necessary; performs health record maintenance, including filing, thinning, and splitting of records; reviews, copies, redacts, and packages, following specified instructions, Protected Health Information (PHI) in response to approved requests; and mails, faxes, emails, and/or transmits appropriate legal requests and responses to various agencies in accordance with DSH policies and procedures.


    The incumbent is expected to maintain confidentiality, privacy, and security of PHI and Personal Information (Pl); maintain professionalism and work positively with all levels of management, supervisors, and staff; promote effective teamwork; utilize a high degree of initiative, judgement, and responsibility; maintain a professional appearance; comply with hospital policies and procedures; and report to work on time.


    Highly desirable qualifications include:
    Experience working in a large healthcare or forensic facility. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Adobe.

    Possession and maintenance of Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) or Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT) certification through the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) (beneficial but not required).


    The Office Technician (Typing) must possess the following:

    KNOWLEDGE:
    Modern office methods, supplies and equipment; business English and correspondence; principles of effective training.


    ABILITY TO:

    Perform difficult clerical work, including ability to spell correctly; use good English; make arithmetical computations; operate various office machines; follow oral and written directions; evaluate situations accurately and take effective action; read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; make clear and comprehensive reports and keep difficult records; meet and deal tactfully with the public; apply specific laws, rules and office policies and procedures; prepare correspondence independently utilizing a wide knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and spelling; communicate effectively; provide functional guidance; type at a speed of not less than 40 words per minute from ordinary manuscript or printed or typewritten material.


    In order to be appointed as Office Technician (Typing), candidates must have a certificate confirming ability to type at least forty (40) words per minute.

    Working Conditions

    Patton is a forensic psychiatric hospital and was established in 1890 and opened in 1893. DSH-Patton provides treatment to forensically and civilly committed patients within a secure treatment area. The hospital does not accept voluntary admissions.

    Training and Development Information

    Training & Development (T&D) assignments are temporary assignments of up to 24 months for training purposes.
