    Summary

    Position Summary

    The Associate Director of the Center for Campus Involvement (CCI) will deliver strategic leadership for collaborative student organization development, student programs, and campus resources, which builds community and learning through University Unions and provides integral student engagement experiences for the diverse student body at the University of Michigan.

    This position directly supervises 2-4 full-time staff that lead functional areas in CCI.

    The Associate Director provides comprehensive internal department management, reporting to the Director of the Center for Campus Involvement/University Unions Associate Director.

    The Center for Campus Involvement (CCI) in University Unions within Student Life at the University of Michigan is a dynamic, student-focused department that serves all undergraduate and graduate students through student programs, student services, and student development.

    Through meaningful involvement, CCI creates transformative experiences, a vibrant community, and lifelong memories for University of Michigan students. CCI recognizes and supports over 1,500 student organizations through education, advising, advocacy and services.

    CCI also implements hundreds of social, educational, and cultural programs each year, focused on building community within and beyond University Unions' facilities.

    CCI directly employs 17 regular staff and 80 student staff.

    University Unions is a self-funded auxiliary enterprise which serves the campus through its three historic unions (Michigan Union, Michigan League, Pierpont Commons), academic meeting and dining facility (Palmer Commons), Center for Campus Involvement, and works in close partnership with Conferences & Event Services and Michigan Dining to provide student-focused and customer-oriented service to the campus community.

    Total budget volume for University Unions approximates $20 million. University Unions directly employs over 80 regular staff and 250 student staff.
    Responsibilities

    Drive strategic goals as determined by departmental staff and students, including the role of the college union.
    Lead the Student Organization Advancement and Recognition (SOAR) Standards of Conduct and Accountability Procedure.
    Ensure engaging and innovative student programs within University Unions; facilities and across campus that drive community building.

    Ensure robust integrative learning and leadership experiences for student organization leaders, utilizing student learning outcomes framed in diversity, equity, and inclusion principles.

    Ensure strategic, future-thinking leadership of CCI's Major Events, Michigan Union Ticket Office, Student Organization Resource Center, and Student Theater Arts Complex.

    Partner with Student Life Research on outcomes assessment and other research initiatives in CCI.
    Navigate and address University policies, procedures, and barriers faced by students and staff in accomplishing their work through CCI.
    Build community with students and staff to create an intentional student engagement plan within University Unions and across campus.

    Cultivate collaborative, positive, and productive relationships among and between CCI and University colleagues, with an emphasis on creating a seamless co-curricular student experience.

    Promote ongoing learning and development experiences for U-M students.
    Maintain responsibility for the direction and goals of the department.
    Model a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and ongoing learning.
    Uphold, interpret, and create policies and procedures that are equitable and in alignment with local, state, and federal laws.
    Employ various well-considered decision-making methods depending on the situation.
    Model customer service delivery and coach others to deliver excellent customer service.
    Promote a safe, equitable, and respectful environment in which concerns can be effectively addressed.
    Provide comprehensive internal department management assistance to the Director.
    Supervision and Advising (30%)

    Directly supervise 2-4 functional area leaders within the Center for Campus Involvement, such as Student Organization Development, Student Programs, Campus Resources.

    Indirectly supervise 10-12 full-time staff, graduate interns and undergraduate student employees.

    Ensure a consistent and cohesive approach to the graduate and undergraduate student employee experience across CCI functional areas and supervisors.

    Perform human resource functions including interviewing, selection, training, performance evaluation, job responsibilities, and disciplinary action for assigned staff.

    Create a team environment of accountability and commitment for reaching goals; ensure team is developed to address needs, problem-solve, and accomplish desired results.

    Give direct feedback, empathize with employees needs, recognize achievements, and recommend improvements.
    Lead staff meetings and retreats.

    Advise students in their co-curricular involvement work, including facilitation of training for students in the area of leadership, organizational development, and programming.

    Assist the Director in upholding the function of the CCI Student Advisory Board.
    Financial Responsibility (20%)
    Responsible for communicating and implementing University and departmental purchasing and procurement policies and procedures.
    Serve as department administrator of the license agreement for the student organization management system.
    Provide administrative oversight of budgets.
    Maintain accurate internal records and budget line projections and work closely with Student Life Budget and Finance.
    Approve payroll.

    Oversee the Student Life Performance Entertainment Agreement process, ensuring the review and negotiation of contracts, appropriate signatory authorities, and consultation with the Office of General Counsel and Risk Management.

    University Unions, Student Life, and University Service (10%)
    Serve on the University Unions Management Team.
    Represent CCI and UU on committees and working groups within and outside the Division of Student Life.
    Serve on the Student Life Activism Response Team.

    Build and sustain effective working partnerships with University colleagues, including, but not limited to, the Office of General Counsel, Risk Management, Division of Public Safety and Security, Transportation, Facilities & Operations, Office of New Student Programs, Alumni Association, Student Life Research, and academic schools and colleges.

    Use a broad range of techniques in communicating ideas and processes to diverse colleagues and students.
    Take responsibility for fostering a positive workplace and make ethical decisions that promote student, organizational, and institutional success.
    Required Qualifications

    Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, or related field
    Five years of experience in student activities or related field
    Three years of experience supervising full-time or graduate student staff
    Experience with and knowledge of student activities, student organization support, budget management, leadership development, advising and supervising students to meet their co-curricular needs
    Desired Qualifications

    An understanding of and commitment to the college union philosophy
    Four or more years of experience supervising full-time staff
    Experience managing complex organizational budgets

    Working conditions
    This job will require regular evening and weekend work during the academic year.

    Occasionally transport items weighing up to 40 pounds.
    Direct reports

    Directly supervise 2-4 functional area leaders within the Center for Campus Involvement, such as Student Organization Development, Student Programs, Campus Resources.

    Indirectly supervise 10-12 full-time staff, graduate interns and undergraduate student employees.

    Selected candidates whose start date is after 4/1/2024 or before 8/31/2024 will not be eligible for the university FY 24-25 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified.

    This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
    Authorization to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment and applicants for this position will not be sponsored for work visas.
    Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.
