    Job Duties

    The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants to fill a part-time Biodiversity Data Management Specialist position in the Natural Heritage Division.

    As a member of a team of spatial ecologists, conservation planners, and GIS specialists in the Information Management section of the award-winning Virginia Natural Heritage Program (VNHP), this position reports to the Assistant Data Manager and is responsible for supporting the processing, analysis, and management of biodiversity data on Natural Heritage Resources (NHR) by integrating data from field, literature, and partner sources into the proprietary database management system called Biotics.

    NHR are rare plants, animals, exemplary natural communities, and ecologically significant sites, and their known locations and habitat are mapped in Biotics.

    These data, along with conservation status and priority information for NHR, guide the development of conservation datasets and tools used internally and shared with partners to inform conservation of Virginia's most significant elements of biodiversity.

    This work requires daily collaboration with DCR staff, and partners, to ensure accurate data are the basis for conservation decisions.

    This position is also responsible for fulfilling various database, mapping, and GIS analysis requests as deemed necessary by management, and may include assistance with maintenance of the Conservation Lands Database.



    Minimum Qualifications

    • Knowledge of general principles of ecology, conservation, and biology
    • Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro and MS Excel

    Additional Considerations

    • Proficiency in spatial analysis
    • Proficiency in ArcGIS Online
    • Proficiency in MS Access
    • Ability to write code in Python, R statistical software, or other programming languages
    • Ability to provide technical support and training for spatial software, including ESRI and R statistical software
    • Familiarity with Structured Query Language (SQL), Crystal Reports, and Oracle
    • Previous work experience with natural heritage programs, natural heritage data, and/or natural heritage methodology
