    Join the HJF Team


    HJF is seeking a Microbiology Laboratory Supervisor II to be responsible for the day to day operations of the laboratory.

    Performs the most advanced laboratory procedures and supervises the work of laboratory technicians. Provides administrative oversight to space management, personnel management, and laboratory supply management.

    This position will be in support of Naval Health Research Center (NHRC), Operational Infectious Diseases (OID).

    OID conducts on-going, laboratory-based surveillance of US military populations in unique environments to quantify and study the etiology of infectious illnesses.

    Test specimens are collected from ongoing surveillance programs and from special investigations of febrile illnesses and pneumonia among military personnel or civilians (recruits, forces afloat, deployed forces, outbreaks of concern, and border populations).

    In addition to the utilization of portable, rapid assay technologies to identify pathogens in the field, test specimens and limited epidemiologic data, when approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB), are provided to the NHRC laboratory where diagnostics and, in some instances, in-depth pathogen characterization is conducted.

    Results are provided to sponsors, the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center, local investigators and collaborators and, when applicable, county health units in order to guide proper responses that ultimately affect both the readiness of US forces and the safety of public health.

    The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine.

    We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike.

    Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners.

    HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

    Responsibilities


    • Manages, leads, and mentors staff. Ensures productivity is monitored, identifying peak and slack periods, and makes operational or staffing adjustments as necessary in both sections.
    • Works with both section supervisors and the laboratory director on complex problems. Identifies, evaluates, and presents solutions.
    • Ensures standardization, without duplicity, within the sections and enforces good clinical practices for the College of American Pathologists (CAP) accreditation. Assists in the development of the quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) plans and procedures.
    • Participates in identifying disease situations and designs proper laboratory support for such projects.
    • May include budgetary responsibility to include plan/forecast, prepare, and approve.
    • Maintains laboratory information systems for two laboratory sections. Identifies information needs and problems, and recommends improvements.
    • Oversees and ensures the appropriate training for employees. Writes user manuals, establishes priorities, and maintains security and confidentiality of information.
    • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
    Supervisory Responsibilities


    • Direct Supervisor: Direct authority to make decisions on the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, starting salaries and merit increases.
    • Conduct employee performance evaluations and directs work activities.
    Qualifications

    Education and Experience


    • Bachelor's Degree in a Microbiology field required, Master's degree preferred
    • Minimum of 9-10 years experience required
    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


    • Knowledge of laboratory procedures, safety procedures and standard laboratory equipment.
    • Skill in use of advanced laboratory techniques and equipment.
    • Ability to supervise and train technicians and direct work assignments.
    • Ability to make presentation to groups, write manuscripts and abstracts, correctly transcribe laboratory results create and enforce standard operating procedures.
    • Must interface with investigators, vendors, research staff, and study participant.
    • Skill in use of word processing, spreadsheet, graphic, email, and database software
    • Must have one of the following:
    • Certified by the ASCP, AMT or other organization deemed comparable by OASD(HA) or their designeeCenter for Laboratory Medicine Services (CLMS) and an MLT or MT/MLS.
    • OR Successfully completed an official U.S Military Medical Laboratory Procedures Training Course of at least 50 weeks duration and currently hold the military enlisted occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician).
    • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret Clearance
    Physical Capabilities


    • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
    • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods
    Work Environment


    • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
    Compensation


    • The likely salary range for this position is $73,800 - $88,134 annually. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Final salary will be determined based on market analysis, experience, and education.
    Some positions or sites may require that the incumbent be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination may be required.
