    POSITION OVERVIEW

    The Senior Engineer, Geotechnical reports to the Manager, Civil Engineering and will be responsible for providing full-time senior level geotechnical engineering guidance and assistance, construction oversight, and operations support, for managed projects within the E&C department during Pre-FEED, FEED, Construction, Commissioning and Start-Up project stages. This position is a role within the Project Development and Engineering (PD&E) group of the Company's Engineering & Construction (E&C) department.

    Typical work interfaces include multi-disciplinary teams from various FEED and EPC contractors to produce deliverables that meet the objectives of the project as defined by the Company, with special emphasis on geotechnical engineering studies, reports, engineering drawings, construction specifications, and other geotechnical engineering deliverables. The successful candidate will typically work with some minimal guidance but is expected to be proficient, semi-autonomous and self-reliant within their area of expertise. A common objective of members within the Project Development and Engineering group is to independently contribute to the overall engineering functional group to ensure that execution of projects is carried out according to contractual obligations, on schedule, and to the agreed specification.

    Other usual and common interfaces may include external specialist engineering consultants, such as civil, marine, and seismic disciplines. Ad-hoc interfaces with internal stakeholders may also include corporate development & strategy, project controls, finance, procurement, contracts, tax, insurance, land, legal and senior management. This position will likely work in either FEED, EPC Contractor's or E&C offices in Houston. The position will require periodic, short-term travel to the project site as necessary to fulfill requirements for site-walkdowns and project meetings.

    RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Primarily support and coordinate SPL Stage 5 FEED geotechnical field investigations and provide additional support to CCL Stage 3 and other projects.
  • Review of geotechnical engineering deliverables prepared by others and presenting findings and conclusions to members of the project team.
  • Develop geotechnical designs for foundations, retaining structures, and earthworks, ensuring stability and compliance with safety standards.
  • Identify potential geotechnical risks and develop mitigation strategies to ensure the integrity and safety of the facility.
  • Coordinate and manage geotechnical aspects of site expansion projects.
  • Analyze geotechnical data from field and lab tests to inform design decisions and project planning.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports, including geotechnical analysis, design recommendations, and risk assessments.
  • Ensure all geotechnical engineering activities comply with relevant regulations, codes, and standards.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including civil engineers, structural engineers, and project managers, to integrate geotechnical solutions.
  • Provide on-site technical support during construction, addressing geotechnical challenges and ensuring design specifications are met.
  • Implement and oversee quality control measures for geotechnical engineering works to maintain high standards of practice.
  • Stay updated with the latest geotechnical engineering technologies and practices to improve project outcomes.
  • Assess and mitigate environmental impacts related to geotechnical activities at the facilities.
  • KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

    Knowledge:

  • This position requires experience in all facets of geotechnical engineering, including site investigation program development and execution, design of complex ground improvement systems, deep foundation design and installation, knowledge of finite element modelling for geotechnical problem solving, and other geotechnical-related project activities, including the coordination of work awarded to external geotechnical consultants.
  • Areas of Knowledge and Expertise, may include but not limited to: field construction activities related to subsurface investigation programs for new and existing facilities shallow soil stabilization ground improvement pile installation and testing earthworks, geotechnical instrumentation installation and monitoring settlement of embankments
  • Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written skills to communicate with team in preparation of reports, memos, calculations, and other technical documentation.
  • Organized and able to manage multiple activities and programs timely and with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Exceptional problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Computer skills to include Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Adaptable to changes in project assignments (potentially outside the geotechnical engineering discipline, e.g.; project engineering) and possess good judgement to prioritize simultaneous work fronts.
  • Prior experience working with large industrial projects
  • Strong administrative abilities are required.
  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    Education, Training and Certifications: Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical Engineering or other related Engineering discipline from an accredited university or college, Masters degree preferred. A Professional Engineer (PE) License in good standing is preferred. Must possess or be able to attain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card.

    Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of progressive related experience in the field. Minimum three years of construction experience.

    The Senior Engineer is an expert in their field and requires minimal supervision and has the ability to multi-task and function in a highly dynamic atmosphere; must exercise discretion independently.

    WORK CONDITIONS

  • Job is performed in a typical office environment located near the construction site.
  • Occasionally required to travel, primarily to an operating or construction site, as business conditions dictate.
