The County of Kings is seeking a dedicated and experienced attorney with high ethical standards and professionalism to join the team at the District Attorney's Office.
The successful candidate will perform difficult and complex legal work involving the preparation, presentation and prosecution of criminal or civil cases in court before a jury; may directly supervise other attorneys and/or legal staff; and perform related duties as required.
There is one immediate full-time vacancy in the District Attorney's Office. Future vacancies for this position may be filled from the eligible list to be established. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Deputy District Attorney III is the full journey level in the Deputy District Attorney classification series.
Incumbents are expected to prosecute the full range of cases occurring within the District Attorney's Office with a minimum of direction.
Deputy District Attorney IV is the highest level in the Deputy District Attorney classification series.Incumbents are expected to prosecute the full range of cases tried before the Superior Court as well as any occurring within the District Attorney's Office with a minimum of direction including prosecution of the most complex, difficult and serious felony cases.
DUTY SAMPLE

LEVEL III:
Reviews cases for filing criminal complaints; reviews and evaluates law enforcement reports and requests for the issuance of criminal complaints; reviews subject rap sheets for prior/past criminal record to assist in making filing decisions; analyzes evidence presented and determines whether or not issuance of complaint can be justified, or whether additional evidence is required; suggests what additional evidence may be needed, how it might be obtained and legal procedures which must be observed in doing so; prepares witness list; prepares and/or supervises the preparation of complaints; interviews and advises complainants and witnesses; conducts extensive legal research; interprets and applies laws, court decisions and other legal authorities for use in the preparation of cases, opinions and briefs; appears in court representing the District Attorney's Office; conducts jury and court trials of criminal or civil cases; prepares complex written legal reports, opinions, briefs and appeals, pleadings and other legal documents; meets with clerical staff to discuss and resolve workflow problems; assists in reassignment of clerical staff to cover priority items as needed; may vertically prosecute cases for specific types of criminal complaints; may provide lead supervision for a major unit in a division of the department; may coordinate and administer specific grants and prepare appropriate reports; may staff pending felony cases with other attorneys; meets with attorney staff to discuss pending felonies and misdemeanors; obtains court calendaring reports, identifies problem cases and matches with appropriate attorneys; may advise grand jury; researches and responds to legal issues for grand jury; expands level of expertise; reads new case and statutory law and legislative changes; attends training seminars; reads and applies training material; responds to public inquiries and requests for assistance; attends briefings and meetings with law enforcement and other public agencies and commissions; may act as press liaison; may conduct training for other departmental attorneys in specialized areas of law.

Education:
Possession of active, valid membership in the California State Bar is evidence of sufficient education for this classification.
License:
Possession of a valid appropriate California driver's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
For LEVEL III
Experience:
Three years of experience practicing as a licensed attorney including one year in the practice of criminal law or one year of experience as a Deputy District Attorney II in Kings County.
For LEVEL IVExperience:
Three years of experience as a Deputy District Attorney in California prosecuting felony cases in Superior Court before a jury and including demonstrated expertise in one or more specialized areas of law.
