    Director of Exploring (Grade 4)

    Bethesda, Maryland (MD)
    Serve as Director of Exploring for the National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.

    Provide leadership to the achievement of the Council's philosophy, mission, and strategy, and to its annual objectives and goals of the Exploring Programs in the Council.

    Exploring serves two different age groups, both coed. Exploring clubs serve middle schoolers, aged 10-14, in sixth through eighth grades. Exploring posts serves older youth 14-20 years old.

    The program model is the same for both age groups- hands-on and interactive character and career activities are facilitated by trained business leaders.

    This position is responsible to support and grow Explorer Post and Club programs in the National Capital Area Council by ensuring the delivery of high-quality programs to youth participants and provide support to volunteers administering the programs.

    Responsibilities

    Sustain current Programs, along with growing and establishing new Post and Club Programs.
    Aid Explorer Posts and Clubs in developing growth plans specific to their needs.
    With the Council Exploring Committee, train volunteers with Exploring resources and encourage Exploring attendance at Council and community events.

    Promote the Exploring initiative concept and message by attending appropriate educational workshops; establish personal networks with local educational and business leaders; participate in appropriate professional groups.

    Schedule meetings with potential community partners.
    Establish new Exploring programs in underserved communities.

    Engage in regular communication with school guidance counselors to provide details on program availability and identify potential youth participants for programs.

    Develop and execute cluster-based competitions for Posts to participate.

    Collect data that includes but is not limited to membership, unit activities and functions, satisfaction of volunteers, parents, and youth, as well as other data as requested.

    Provides reports, work plans, and territory analysis as required, to Council Leadership.

    Partner with Development department to raise the Exploring committee share of the Council budget and monitor the budget over the calendar year.

    Create new and ongoing partnerships with local corporations who support/sponsor Exploring initiatives. Grant writing is a plus.
    Oversee recurring Post/Club Leader monthly meetings to provide them with support, training, and Council updates.
    As the Director of Exploring, maintain the Exploring page on Council website and other social media pages.
    Education

    Bachelor's degree, or equivalent, from an accredited institution.
    Qualifications


    A sense of ownership of the Council's path and success through Exploring; proven ability to communicate it, inspire donors, volunteers and staff with it, and commitment to grow it.

    Strong interpersonal, written communication and verbal presentation skills.

    Effective in managing membership and new unit organization to achieve growth on a consistent basis with attention to retention of units and youth.

    Ability to communicate effectively with top corporate and community leaders.
    Well organized, detail oriented and staff leadership skills.
    Thrives in a fast-paced environment with passionate and committed people.
    Excellent analytic skills with a proven commitment to accuracy and timeliness.
    Must be able to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
    Must possess a focus on continuous improvement and growth, both within the organization and within self.
    Flexible schedule frequently required for evening/weekend events.
    Team player, positive attitude, and willingness to learn.
    Valid driver's license and ability to be insured.
    Physical Demands
    Must be able to drive to appointments and to the office during both daylight and evening hours.
    Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
    Must be able to sit for prolonged periods.
    Must be able to work on a PC for prolonged periods.
    Must be able to communicate with members, volunteers, staff, and others in person, via telephone, letter, and e-mail.

    In addition to offering a competitive salary of ($55,000), Professional Scouting offers benefits to include major medical, prescription coverage, dental, vision, life-insurance, short and long-term disability, accidental death, retirement plan, plus compensation for authorized and approved business-related expenses to include phone and mileage reimbursement.
