    Responsibilities

    General Role

    The Office of Minority Student Affairs (OMSA) manages a number of different programs that support the academic excellence and success of those students who come from backgrounds that historically have been underrepresented in higher education, including students admitted through the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), students who come from low-income families, first-generation college students, and students of color. The OMSA team provides comprehensive and proactive support for students' academic pursuits, career goals and co-curricular interests. Moreover, the office is viewed as a space that encourages authentic discussion and discourse, creates a family friendly environment, and serves as a strong voice of advocacy across the institution. The counselor will play a critical role in supporting our students and join a dynamic team of colleagues committed to the core values of equity, diversity, and inclusion. These values are realized through the development, implementation, and coordination of programs, events, and support services designed to aid in students' persistence to graduation.

    The counselor is expected to provide comprehensive counseling, advising and support services to students. Directly assists with development and implementation of student-oriented programs specifically designed to promote retention and graduation of program students. (Some programming requires night and weekend work.) The counselor is expected to be especially sensitive to the needs of students from academically and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, as well as underserved populations. The counselor reports directly to the associate director of OMSA.

    Primary Responsibilities

    Advising

    • Monitor and evaluate students' academic progress and develop strategies to enhance academic performance.
    • Provide academic, financial, personal, social and career counseling for a defined caseload of students.
    • Assist in the recruitment and admission of OMSA and HEOP students.
    • Assess special needs of students and make appropriate referrals to College and University-wide services and resources.
    • Maintain confidential student records and submit evaluative data for State and Institutional reports.
    • Provide support for multicultural student groups as either primary or secondary advisor, or chapter advocate.

    Program Development

    • Assist in the planning and implementation of activities associated with the pre-freshman Early Connection Opportunity (ECO) program.
    • Assist in the planning and implementation of activities associated with the Academic Achievement Reception, Senior Dinner Celebration, and other OMSA programs.
    • Participate in student diversity and inclusion programming and support initiatives as designated by the director or designee.
    • Serve as primary liaison for several student service offices within Arts, Sciences and Engineering.

    Assessment and Data Support

    • Assist with assessment & evaluation of various student support components of OMSA
    • In collaboration with the director and relevant stakeholders advance strategic planning efforts of the department: coordinate and monitor practices that promote the retention & graduation of HEOP students, first generation and URM students.
    • Undertake special projects as assigned by the associate director, the assistant dean/director, or designee.

    Grant and Proposal Support

    • In concert with the director and designated team will assist with the grant programs, i.e. HEOP and FYSCI, to ensure information and resports are submitted in a timley manner
    • Identifies key areas for fundraising efforts and potential grants to support HEOP, ECO, and underrepresented minority students now and in the years to come.

    Other duties as assigned

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Bachelor's degree required.
    • A Masters in higher education administration, college student personnel administration, mental health, social work, or counseling is preferred.
    • 2 years relevant work experience with college students required.
    • 3-5 years relevant work experience with college students preferred.
    • or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
    • Strong interpersonal, organizational, written and oral communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work in a student-centered environment where sensitivity to issues of equity, diversity and inclusion are expected of all staff required.
    • Demonstrated ability to collect, manage and analyze confidential internal data, external benchmarking and published research to design, implement and evaluate programming and outreach initiatives that proactively advance evidence-based, high-quality learning programming practice required.
    • Strong project management skills, including ability to prioritize and manage multiple complex projects, coordinate with partners and initiate and execute appropriate timelines required.
    • Ability to problem solve, think critically and make sound judgments required.
    • Ability to adjust to rapidly changing priorities and environment required.
    • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and lead change required.
    • Spanish fluency preferred.
    • Practical knowledge and utilization of computer software applications is an asset, particularly FileMaker Pro, Microsoft Office, the Box and website development and maintenance applications preferred.
    • Dedication to professional development of self and others required.
    • A sense of humor and interest in engaging with a dynamic group of professionals, students and colleagues, with a goal of establish strong working partnerships while helping OMSA embody Meliora-ever better required.

    Pay Range

    Pay Range: $ $ 29.29 Hourly

    The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
