REQUIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
An Associate Degree from a Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program including courses in chemistry and biology and one year of Clinical Laboratory Technician experience.
Equivalent education/experience.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Plans, organizes and assigns staff work assignments and breaks in a manner that maintains smooth workflow regardless of workload.
Communicates with supervisor concerning lab's operational status, training needs, personnel issues, and staff concerns. Works with supervisor to review workplace procedures and policies.
Reports issues or concerns from other laboratory divisions or hospital staff through HC1 or other reporting mechanism i.e., Quality Improvement tracking mechanism, Incident Reports, or Patient Safety Network.
Must be able to perform tasks on all benches in processing areas to oversee and fill in on all benches whenever needed during short staffing periods.
Solves specimen problems in a timely, thorough and accurate manner, providing appropriate documentation for supervisor review.Makes constructive suggestions for improvements in the laboratory and staffing distribution.
Keeps laboratory staff informed regarding specimen and/or handling problems or procedural changes.
Oversees training of new staff to ensure that training is completed and documented on a timely basis.
Provides and updates training materials. Work with supervisor to perform, assess and document competency evaluations of current employees.
Maintains confidentiality regarding concerning staff and personnel issues.
Provide communications about opportunities for continuing education to all staff.
Directs staff to ensure the workplace is clean, neat, and professional in appearance.
Oversees and ensures that bio-hazardous precautions are followed at all times including the disposal of biohazard waste in a timely manner.
Performs computer functions in LIS as required for completions of tasks; acts as a resource to others. Ensures that specimen processing runs smoothly during scheduled and unscheduled computer downtime.
Understands how to use the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and HC1 for problem resolution.
Upon completion of training, be able to accurately and appropriately perform laboratory billing rejection resolution to ensure timely submission.
This includes maintaining the "MERGE" and patient identification correction documentation records, cancel and credit functions and resolution of duplicate charges.
Ensure that staff always follows established departmental policies and division specific processes and guidelines.
Integrates new or revised processes into the workplace. Author new guidelines and job aids under direction of supervisor.
Perform biennial review of current documentation per CAP requirements.
Helps to maintain, archive, and retrieve records.
Reports equipment and or facility problems in a timely manner and provides adequate notice to staff.
Ensures refrigeration temperatures are monitored daily and takes corrective action in case of refrigeration equipment failure.
Maintains and or notifies appropriate lead or supervisor of supply inventory needs; order as needed.
Provide safety checks of equipment, reagents or bench practices as needed.
Under direction of manager and/or supervisor, may serve in several specialized roles.
These include divisional Quality Assurance, as a representative on committees to implement new systems or processes, as division's envoy for specialized department or hospital related initiatives, and/or work on other projects as assigned by manager or supervisor.
