    Note: All Santa Fe Public Schools positions require a post-offer/pre-employment background check. Some positions have additional requirements established by federal or state rules and regulations.

    General Function:
    Serves as the educational leader and chief administrator of a middle school or a site of comparable size and complexity. Responsible for implementing and managing policies, regulations, and procedures to ensure that students are provided a safe learning environment that conforms to academic standards and policies of federal, state, and local regulatory agencies. The principal is responsible, in accordance with state standards, regulations, statutes, and local school policies, for the organization, administration, supervision, and academic achievement of students.

    Education/Training/Experience
    (Basic minimum requirements are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the District.)
    Minimum: Masters-level degree in a related field and a minimum of five (5) years of experience as a teacher. Experience in curriculum development. Assistant Principal experience in a secondary setting is preferred. Successful performance in the position held at the time of application. Knowledge of Common Core Standards and Secondary reform options. Working knowledge of budgets and the use of data to inform instruction. Public speaking skills.

    Preferred: Master's level education with a concentration in education administration or secondary education and three (3) years of experience in school administration, internship, or assistant principal. Bilingual English/Spanish. Knowledge about SPED inclusion and master scheduling.

    Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:
    Excellent written and oral communication and conflict mediation skills. Ability to anticipate potential problems and resolve or correct those that occur. Ability to make decisions with long-term effects and/or legal and financial implications for the school and district. Knowledge of organization facilitation, Word processing, e-mail, and standard office software packages. Knowledge of District data software is beneficial. Ability to multi-task, prioritize work activities, meet deadlines, and work with people at all organizational levels, including students and community members. Use of technology for data collection, analysis and reporting to promote academic achievement. The position requires meeting with various community-based organizations regularly and attending Public Education Department meetings and regular internal meetings. Must have a well-defined sense of community service.

    Essential Job Functions
    Performs all functions by established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, and facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change occasionally to meet the organization's needs. Current essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
    1. Supervises educational and administrative staff. Promote effective teacher practices by providing leadership to staff, including evaluation, counseling, support for corrective action, and professional development.
    2. Lead by being in classrooms and providing effective feedback to teachers to improve practice.
    3. Leads secondary reform strategies at assigned schools and participates in developing district strategies for these initiatives.
    4. Ensures that Common Core State Standards are implemented with fidelity.
    5. Interviews and makes recommendations to hire teachers and other staff.
    6. Develop and evaluate educational programs, curriculum, and standards to meet the educational goals of the school, board, district, and state.
    7. Assumes overall responsibility for the safety, security, and appearance of the school facility. Requisitions and allocates supplies, equipment, and instructional material as needed. Manages facilities to maintain a healthy, safe environment.
    8. Responsible for appropriate discipline of students.
    9. Establishes and oversees Advisory School Councils and ensures compliance of Council with State requirements.
    10. Responsible for appropriate and timely state and federal reports concerning individual or district reporting.
    11. Responsible for using analysis or data to create and modify instruction and decision-making.
    12. Manages school climate, including ensuring discipline and student safety. Confers with teachers, students, and parents concerning educational and behavioral problems in school. Monitors school safety and security.
    13. Keeps administrative records and either directs the preparation or prepares reports, which includes preparing the budget and monitoring expenditure of funds. Reporting includes preparation of memos and letters of correspondence, newsletters, class schedules, attendance reports, and grant reports.
    14. Serves as liaison between the school and parents, business partners, and community, interpreting activities and policies and encouraging participation in school life. Attends school and community events.
    15. Provides input to grant applications. Maintains grant programs and records.
    16. Participates in district and community meetings, committees, and school events.
    17. Oversees construction projects.
    18. Communicate and uphold district policies, develop consensus, mediate problems, and coordinate schedules and activities with various individuals, including staff members, district administrators and professionals, consultants, volunteers, parents, media reporters, and other people in the community.
    19. Performs other related duties as assigned.
    Salary Range:
    Based on experience.
    $84,000 - $97,600+

    Resources Used in Performing Job Include (but are not limited to):
    Standard office equipment includes computers, copiers, fax, phone, and alarm systems. Automobile to travel to other district buildings.

    Physical/Cognitive Requirements:
    Regularly required to stand; move throughout a room and/or facility. Communicate verbally and electronically. Use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. Occasionally required to sit, climb, and balance, and drive. May have occasion to perform heavy lifting up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and private automobile. Some evening or weekend work and travel may be required.

    Environmental Conditions:
    Position requires driving among school sites to attend meetings, some of which occur in the evening. Heavy telephone interaction with students, parents, district staff, and community. Frequent interruptions. The noise level is usually moderate. They are occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions. Duties performed in school and office settings include a music room, classrooms, gym, auditorium, and offices. Principals will be subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, noise, and hazards.

    7. Utilizes appropriate body mechanics to prevent muscle strain/injury.
