    Commonwealth Veterinary Hospital has an opportunity for a Full Time Experienced Veterinary Technician to join our team

    Commonwealth Veterinary Hospital first opened its doors in 1939. Since then, it has been a staple in the community serving its surrounding families and their furry friends. Commonwealth Veterinary Hospital is a 5 doctor practice that sees dogs and cats. We have the necessary equipment to perform a wide variety of surgical procedures, and schedule procedures 5 days a week. Our hospital flow relies on utilizing technicians to the full extent of their capabilities.

    Our team is capable of providing a large array of services including: Cardiac and abdominal ultrasounds, weekly visits with a boarded IM specialist to consult on cases, extensive soft tissue surgery, advanced oral surgical procedures, endoscopy, fecal transplants, stem cell therapy, limited oncology treatments, and more.

    We are seeking an experienced full-time veterinary technician to join our team. Certified and non-certified candidates will be considered. We are a fast paced, high quality care general practice currently supporting a 5 doctor team.

    Mental health is a top priority at Commonwealth Veterinary Hospital. We typically offer a 4-day work week to support work-life balance, with rotating Saturday shifts. We even have a cleaning crew visit daily so that our team can leave on time and focus on patient care.

    Our hours are as follows:

    • Monday - Friday 8-6

    • Saturday 8-1

    • Sundays - Closed

    Your duties will include assisting veterinarians and other technicians in outpatient appointments, phlebotomy, setting up medications, client education, follow up communication with clients post-treatment, and phone triage as needed.

    Experienced surgical technician candidates will also participate in monitoring and recovery of surgical patients, intake/discharge of surgical patients, preparing/administering anesthesia, placing intravenous catheters, intubation, performing dental prophylaxis, and obtaining full mouth dental radiographs.

    Some computer skills are necessary. Ability to provide high level customer service, and work successfully in a team environment required. Individuals with a growth mindset are encouraged to apply.

    Compensation: Our compensation package consists of pay starting in the $25 - $35 range, based on experience and certification status, with potential yearly bonus.     Full-time team members will be awarded additional PTO based on their years of service.

    Responsibilities/Major Duties:

    • Our Veterinary Technicians are responsible for in-patient medical care- administer medications, assist or perform treatments, diagnostics & monitoring, place IV catheters, draw blood, run lab tests, administer IV fluids, cleaning, feeding, and walking patients as needed.

    • Anesthesia/Surgery - Our Veterinary Technician's prep, induction, maintenance, monitoring, recovery of patients, cleans/maintains/sterilize anesthesia equipment and surgical instruments.

    • Dentistry- Our Veterinary Technician's provide ultrasonic cleaning and polishing, obtain dental radiographs with every case, and assist the doctor with oral surgery.

    • Radiology - Our Veterinary Technician's position patients and assist with radiographs, sending radiographs via email.

    • Laboratory duties- Our Veterinary Technicians are responsible for collecting, preparing, & running or submitting samples for requested tests; reading and recording results when indicated (Ear cytology etc) when requested by doctor. All fecal/urine samples are sent out and processed by the reference lab.

    • Preparing invoices, discharge instructions, and client informational tools

    • Client communication for hospitalized patients - give patient updates, discharge instructions, and provide follow up for certain hospital patients.

    • Client medical demonstrations / education - teach/educate clients on at home care procedures.

    • Veterinary Technician appointments- vaccine boosters, blood draws for therapeutic monitoring / screening tests, post-op checks, suture removals, AG, NT.

    • Outpatient technician shifts- assisting doctor with outpatient appointments, preparing, restocking, cleaning exam room, check patients in and out, take history and vitals as needed, input data into patient medical record, ensure a smooth and timely flow of outpatient appointments from check-in to discharge.

    • Support & Assist with reception/front desk duties as needed- answering phones, booking appointments, triage/scheduling.

    • Assist in training and mentoring new team members.

    • Assist with inventory control - informing inventory manager when products are getting low/out, unpacking, restocking drug & medical supplies.

    • Preparing prescriptions - dispensed medications & medication refills.

    Qualifications/Physical Requirements:

    • The veterinary technician must have the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds and over 50 pounds with a coworker.

    • The veterinary technician must be able to endure sitting, standing and walking on hard floor surfaces for extended periods of time.

    • The veterinary technician must possess sufficient ambulatory skills to perform duties while in a hospital environment.

    • The veterinary technician must be able to work in noisy work conditions with sounds from animals and equipment that can be moderately high.

    • The veterinary technician will be routinely exposed to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch, and on occasion, exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medication/controlled substances.

    • The veterinary technician must have good hand-eye coordination, arm-hand-finger dexterity, the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard and operate equipment.

    Job Summary: This position provides leadership and training to the medical support staff in the operation of a small animal facility in accordance with hospital policy and procedures and provides medical care to patients as allowed in the veterinary practice act. The Veterinary Technician will be able to communicate effectively with employees and clients and have great attention to detail and organizational abilities.

    • Review medical records, estimates or discharge instructions with clients.
    • Answer client's inquiries about basic animal care questions and routine procedures; handle client's medical questions with confidence and direct to veterinarians when appropriate.
    Qualifications

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • High School Diploma or equivalent.
    • Some veterinary industry experience required.
    • Must be proficient in a variety of skills ranging from but not limited to laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, surgery, dental and nursing skills.
    • Ability to demonstrate patience and composure in stressful situations, and ability to handle a fast-paced environment.
    • Ability to stay calm and efficient during a medical crisis.
    • Ability to give SQ, IM and IV injections.
    • Knowledge of usage, dosage, and common side-effects for commonly used prescription drugs and ability to readily explain them to the clients.
