    Job Title: Research & Development Director

    Department: Research and Development

    Reports to: R&D Executive Director

    FLSA Status: Regular- Exempt

    Salary: Negotiable

    Location: Rochester, New York

    ROLE SUMMARY:

    The Research & Development Director will work directly with other members of the R&D department to facilitate product development, and drive research projects. The Research & Development Director will be SME in cannabis, hemp, cannabinoids, and all derivative products. Multi-state travel during expansion will be required.

    KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Ideation of novel cannabis products
    • Work with R&D New Product and project manager on new product development
    • Manage research projects independently and report results to Executive Director of Research and Development
    • Maintain Good Laboratory Practices
    • Facilitate and develop experimental designs
    • Facilitate product development from ideation to manufacturing scale up to product launch
    • Maintain documentation of intellectual property by maintaining a laboratory notebook and proper management of Experimental Operating Procedures
    • Continuous monitoring of cutting-edge technologies and applications regarding cannabis products
    • Engineering and process design, continuous improvement, new manufacturing technologies
    • All other duties as assigned

    SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

    • BS, MS, or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field
    • At least 4 years in cannabis industry product development
    • Specific knowledge of cannabinoids and terpene chemistry
    • Specific knowledge of cGMP, pharmaceutical manufacturing methods and engineering principles
    • Strong knowledge of cannabis extraction methodology and post processing
    • Strong project management ability
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Ability to communicate in a proactive and solutions-focused manner, including keeping management aware of potential issues
    • Ability to think critically and operate independently
    • Basic computer knowledge, including Microsoft Word and Excel
    • Communicate effectively with ability to function in a team environment
    • Ability to effectively organize, multitask, and work in a fast-paced, deadline driven work environment
    • Detail oriented with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve equipment problems
    • Ability to pass a Level 2 Background Screening
    • Must be at least 21 years old

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 25lbs to a minimum height of 5 feet and able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet, with or without mechanical assistance
    • Must be able to work seated/standing as appropriate at workstations for extended periods of time, maintain body equilibrium while climbing ladders, stairways, stopping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching, and use hands/fingers to hold, grasp, turn, pick, pinch frequently/constantly to complete tasks
    • Must be able to handle organic matter daily, able to wear PPE as appropriate (eye, face, hand, arm, head, foot, body, fall protection), and able to be exposed to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions while wearing PPE (95 degrees or greater)
    • Must have visual acuity with/without job aids to perform activities such as; reading, viewing a computer terminal, visual inspection involving small parts/details. Clarity of vision at 20 ft or more in day and night/dark conditions
    • Must be able to speak and communicate verbally at conversation levels with co-workers, vendors, etc. (Moderate noise)

    WORK SCHEDULE:

    • 40+ hours weekly with flexible hours depending on department needs. Must be available to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays
