    Job Description

    Job Description

    Summary:

The Child Mind Institute is seeking highly skilled individuals with an interest in children's mental health to participate in our August 2024 Brave Buddies Program. This is an unpaid, part-time internship position located in our NYC headquarters office.

Brave Buddies is an intensive group behavioral treatment program designed to help children with selective mutism (SM) speak in school and other public places. SM is an anxiety disorder characterized by a child's inability to speak in some social situations despite being able to speak fluently when comfortable.

Program interns will be trained in behavioral therapy tools/skills to work with children with SM by participating in various activities with them, to help them and prompt them to use verbal responses and speak spontaneously as they play with other children and adults. Program participants will be trained in the skills from Parent-Child Interaction Therapy for Selective Mutism (PCIT-SM), an evidence-based treatment for SM, and are taught and coached to facilitate speech across various settings and activities.

Brave Buddies is offered as a multi-day session twice a year and as a one-day session multiple times throughout the year.

The next Brave Buddies session will be held August 5th to August 9th, 2024.

Program interns must be available for the preparation and training sessions, as well as the entirety of the program to be considered (exceptions will be made for religious observance).

Training and preparation sessions will be held at our Midtown office location; the Brave Buddies Program will be held offsite in Manhattan.

Program interns must be available in person at the following dates and times:

Thursday July 11th 9:30AM-2:30PM: Selective Mutism/Brave Buddies Intern Training Part I

Thursday July 18th 9:30AM-2:30PM: Selective Mutism/Brave Buddies Intern Training Part II

Thursday August 1st 12-6PM: Brave Buddies Prep Sessions Part I

Friday August 2nd 12-4PM: Brave Buddies Prep Sessions Part II

Monday August 5th to Friday August 9th 8AM-3PM: Brave Buddies

    Learning Opportunities:

The Brave Buddies program provides a learning and training opportunity for individuals interested in children's mental health, specifically in the field of selective mutism. They will gain experience by working directly with children with selective mutism. Program participants will be trained in the skills from Parent Child Interaction Therapy for Selective Mutism (PCIT-SM), an evidence-based treatment for SM, and are taught and coached to facilitate speech across various settings and activities.

    Responsibilities:

    • Attend all required training and program dates in person
    • Participate fully in training and demonstrate the ability to use behavioral skills/tools learned to support patients
    • Program interns must be available for the preparation and training sessions, as well as the entirety of the program

    Qualifications:

    • Prior experience working with children and/or in a clinical setting
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
    1. Team player and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
    2. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
    3. Ability to maintain discretion and integrity at all times

    Application Process:

Please upload a cover letter and CV to be considered for the position.
