Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Education is searching for a Director of Board Relations.

The position provides support to the State Board of Education President, the Superintendent of Public Instruction, Chief of Staff, cabinet members and assistant superintendents in planning the Board's regular monthly business meetings and committee meetings as well as yearly retreats, maintains regular contact with the members of the Board to assist them in carrying out their responsibilities, coordinates correspondence on behalf of the Board and Superintendent, serves as a communication liaison between the Board and Department staff, conducts research and policy analysis, works with the Superintendent of Public Instruction to address issues raised by the Board members, helps advise the Board on policy decisions, and provides logístical and executive support for the meetings.

Working with the Superintendent, Chief of Staff, and Assistant Superintendent for Policy and Government Relations, and coordinating with the Department staff, the position supports the policy development work of the Board of Education.

This position also serves as the main point of contact for the public to communicate with the Board of Education and prepares responses to inquiries in cooperation with Department staff and Board members.

The position prepares Board documents, such as the comprehensive plan and annual report to ensure the Board's priorities and goals are met.


Pursuant to Sections and of the Code of Virginia, this position has been designated to file an annual Statement of Economic Interests form.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of education policy, policy development, state agency functions, regulatory processes and current issues & trends in education.
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize education policies and proposals.
  • Ability to coordinate projects across multiple agency teams.
  • Ability to use project planning tools, demonstrate project management strategies, and mitigate low and high priority risks.
  • Strong communication, writing, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrates communication skills and attention to details.
  • Ability to work independently and to manage multiple and complex assignments.
  • Success in understanding the sensitivity of high profile projects as well as high profile board communications.
  • Experience leading and supervising staff.
  • Ability to plan high profile, public events.

Additional Considerations

  • Considerable project management experience.
  • Experience with government functions at the local, state, or federal levels.
  • Considerable experience in educational policy analysis is preferred.
  • Graduation from a college or university with an advanced degree in education, public administration, law or public policy is preferred.
  • Leadership, management, and supervision experience.
