    JOB PURPOSE
    The purpose of the Associate Director for Outdoor Programs and Leadership is to provide leadership and supervision for the Outdoor Center operations and student-led adventure-based off campus experiences. This includes training and mentoring student trip leaders, onboarding and maintaining a robust field instructor community, managing the weekend trip program, coordinating SPOT (adventure based new student pre-orientation program), and providing direct supervision for the Manager of the Outdoor Center and the Coordinator of Experiential Programs. This position will hold a teaching specialist title within the DAPER Academic Program and teach within the OUTDOOR academic portfolio.

    Your responsibilities will include:

    • Develop, train, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students to lead adventure-based experiences.
    • Plan and implement student led adventure-based weekend trips including maintaining permits and land management relationships.
    • Review field experience documentation (i.e. trip binders, LOPs, incident reports, etc.).
    • Coordinate the planning and implementation of the large, multi-site, Stanford Pre-Orientation Trip (SPOT) program.
    • Provide direct supervision for full time staff
    • Provide direct supervision of student trip leader staff and create opportunities for their continued leadership development
    • Responsible for the instruction and administration of academic courses within the Outdoor Education portfolio units per year).
    • Provide leadership in Risk Management for student led programs and Outdoor education courses
    • Train field instructors for Outdoor Education leadership courses.
    • Engage in critical analysis of student performance based on course outcomes.
    • Assist with budget development and the monitoring of expenditures.
    • Work with campus partners in supporting student outdoor leadership and education

    To be successful in this position, you will bring:

    Education and Experience

    • Bachelor's degree and 5 years of employment experience in the field of campus recreation/outdoor education or a combination of education and relevant experience in campus recreation/outdoor education, leadership and team development. Advanced degree preferred.
    • Wilderness First Responder and CPR certification.
    • Professional experience with outdoor education field programs

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Strong communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and management.
    • Knowledge of current risk management practices in recreation and outdoor education settings
    • An advanced understanding of recreation and adventure programs
    • An understanding of student development theory and practices
    • Ability to operate a vehicle for university purposes while possessing and maintaining an appropriate license.
    • Advanced analysis and problem-solving skills.
    • Advanced computer skills, including experience with Google and Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Relevant computer systems/technology experience.
    • Understanding of financial processes, transactions and reconciling procedures
    • Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
    • Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
    • Ability to be in the field, carry weight up to 60 pounds (in the field only), and camp on the ground in primitive backcountry environments during a variety of seasonal climates.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    • Work schedule will include working extended hours, evenings or weekends.
    • Will travel to remote areas of the state including National Parks, National Forests and other backcountry wilderness settings

    DAPER's Integrity:
    This position, along with all DAPER coaches and staff, is responsible for the integrity of Stanford's intercollegiate athletics program and for the reputation of Stanford University. This position is responsible for ensuring that their involvement with Athletic Department activities maintains the integrity of the University's reputation and does not negatively impact the relationship between the University and its faculty, staff, students and alumni. Additionally, this position must comply with University policies and procedures, NCAA and ACC rules and regulations.

    The expected pay range for this position is $90,000-93,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
