ROLE
This newly established role is primarily tasked with developing a robust and efficient control framework for Northern Trust's external Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting.
This includes designing, documenting, and validating processes and controls for Northern Trust's Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reporting, as well as managing risk and governance aspects of financial disclosures.
A solid understanding of process and control principles within the Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) framework is essential.
The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the ESG Finance Team, while also fostering strong relationships with Northern Trust's Climate Risk team, Work Place Services (WPS), Corporate Sustainability, Inclusion and Social Impact (CSISI), Global Financial Control, and local Finance teams in EMEA and APAC.
Initially, the analyst will join the ESG Finance Team within the Corporate Controller's Group and report directly to the ESG Controller.
Principal Responsibilities
Design a robust and efficient control framework for Northern Trust's ESG-related financial reporting process, particularly concerning GHG emission calculations.
Document controls in compliance with Northern Trust's SOX requirements.
Identify and assess risks and potential sources of error across relevant processes.
Review and test controls, organizing walkthroughs and controls testing with internal and external auditors.
Identify and recommend best practices to enhance control quality, precision, and accuracy.
Offer recommendations for implementing controls around GHG inventory collection processes globally, providing training to WPS staff on proper performance and documentation of controls.
Skills / Experience
Required Skills
Solid background in corporate financial control environment with expertise in accounting, reporting, financial control requirements, and audit requirements.
Openness to learning GHG Accounting basics and gaining general knowledge of different climate reporting standards and Northern Trust's reporting requirements.
Ability to grasp how detailed activities in focused areas contribute to the broader climate accounting and reporting landscape for individual legal entities and the Corporation as a whole.
Critical thinker who takes independent initiative to research inherent risks, emerging guidance, and issues relevant to processes and controls, proposing solutions or enhancements as needed.
Capable of meeting strict deadlines, managing multiple projects, and working under pressure during peak periods.
Preferred knowledge of GHG accounting requirements.
Experience with Northern Trust's BWise System is advantageous.
Financial service industry experience is beneficial.
Certified Public Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor certification is advantageous.
