Job Description:
The Planetary Science Lab (PSL) in Geology & Geophysics, Louisiana State University (LSU), led by Dr. Suniti Karunatillake seeks a 24-month Postdoctoral Fellow.
The LSU Big Idea Phase 3 Provost's Seed Grant entitled "The GANGOTRI mission for geologic, habitability, and resource insight of Mars," primarily funds the position.
The Fellow will lead key aspects of mission development summarized in our Poster-Abstract from NASA's inaugural Technology Showcase, the related NASA-NAS Decadal Survey White Paper (2021), and potentially technology advancement from analog research at glacial sites like the eponymous Gangotri.
Numerous collaborations are expected within the 17-member team led jointly by Karunatillake and Dr.Scott Perl (NASA-Jet Propulsion Laboratory, within the JPL Origins and Habitability Lab), spanning 4 NASA centers (JPL, NASA-Marshall Space Flight Center; NASA-Johnson Space Center, and NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center), Los Alamos National lab, 1 European space center, and 2 space companies.
GANGOTRI also crosscuts 3 LSU colleges and 5 departments, including 3 early-career faculty. Additional opportunities include GANGOTRI-advancing collaborations with an incoming NASA Postdoctoral Program Fellow, advised by team member Dr. Heidi Haviland at the NASA-MSFC.Duties Include:
40% Submitting at least two mission-related manuscripts to internationally circulated journals managed by non-profit professional societies (e.g., American Geophysical Union's Journal of Geophysical Research).
25% Leading one abstract on one of GANGOTRI's science aims or hypotheses, another supporting LSU's payload suite, and co-authoring a third with the GANGOTRI team.
25% Proposing a topical project (e.g., science and payload demonstrations at a Mars context glacial site) to a NASA or National Science Foundation (NSF) solicitation.
Minimum Qualifications:
PhD in Geoscience, space or planetary science.
Specific experience required:
The applicant's research areas may span any combination of GANGOTRI-related topics: for example, analysis of Martian glacial observations across multiple satellite datasets; field work on Earth's glacial processes; geophysical surveying methods including acoustic seismology; atomic and nuclear remote sensing methods such as visible to near-infrared, and gamma-neutron spectroscopy; and modeling englacial weathering or isotopic exchange.
Job Competencies required:
Beginner in Rugged (i.e., camping-only) field research experiences if any
Advanced in First-authored peer-reviewed works during the PhD, particularly relying on science or engineering data analysis with Python, ENVI/IDL, MATLAB, or Mathematica and Instances of communicating science to a global research audience at venues like the LPSC
Proficient in Papers in each year following the PhD and Examples of proposing projects to a taxpayer-funded central government venue (e.g., Future Investigators in NASA Earth and Space Science and Technology, ROSES Habitable Worlds, NASA NPP)
The salary for this position will be $47,000 annually.
