    Job Summary:

    The Sous Chef is responsible for assisting the Chef with the daily culinary operations of the HoMA Café and HoMA Coffee Bar, including menu planning, preparing all menu items, working the line, stock management, health and safety regulations compliance, and quality control.

    The Sous Chef helps build, develop, and inspire a professional culinary team. In the kitchen, the Sous Chef is a hands-on, working supervisor who creates an exceptional and unique dining experience for our guests.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Three years of prior experience working in a professional kitchen in a leadership role such as lead cook or sous chef.
    • Strong interest in culinary arts with a desire and willingness to teach and learn.
    • Knowledge of labor laws, health codes, safe food and beverage handling, and sanitation as well as general safety and security procedures.
    • Basic bookkeeping and math skills and general computer literacy, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Excel.
    • Strong supervisory skills, including the ability to train others in health and safety standards and various cooking techniques.
    • Highly organized and detail oriented, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and work calmly and efficiently with grace under pressure.
    • Ability to think creatively and to successfully resolve unexpected issues as they arise.
    • Honesty, integrity, enthusiasm, perspective, and a strong work ethic supported by commitment and follow-through.
    • Ability to work within and support a diverse community of visitors, artists, and employees.
    • Ability to build, lead, and develop a driven, diverse team of employees and volunteers.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • A.A.S. in Culinary Arts, Pastry Arts, or Hospitality and Restaurant Management.
    • ServSafe certification and strong understanding of food safety and general sanitation.

    Essential Duties:

    • Oversees kitchen operations and staff during evening service.
    • Develops new and exciting grab-and-go menu items for the HoMA Coffee Bar. Ensures menu execution and maintenance of stock.
    • Assists the Chef in menu development at HoMA Café utilizing contemporary and classic culinary techniques, styles, flavors, and presentation.
    • Manages, trains, and inspires the HoMA culinary team. Participates in the recruitment process of new kitchen staff alongside the Chef and the Head of Food and Beverage.
    • Trains kitchen staff to ensure all menu items are executed with excellence and consistency.
    • Ensures kitchen staff understand and comply with all health, safety, and sanitation regulations.
    • Prepares, cooks, and plates food as well as expediting during dining service hours.
    • Orders, receives, and inspects food for culinary preparation: produce, meat, fish, groceries, etc.
    • Maintains kitchen work areas, keeping them clean and organized.
    • Maintains kitchen equipment by performing maintenance and cleaning on a regular basis, including closing procedures.
    • Assumes the duties of the Chef when Chef is absent.

    Compensation

    The Honolulu Museum of Art is committed to practicing salary transparency. The minimum salary for this position is $55,000 per annum and the maximum salary is $60,000 per annum. Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting pay, including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity. This opportunity includes a generous benefits package, including but not limited to:

    Working Conditions and Atmosphere:

    The Honolulu Museum of Art Café and Coffee Bar are open Wednesday through Sunday, with evening service on Fridays and Saturdays.

    This role operates in a kitchen environment. This role routinely uses sinks and dishwashers and tools to clean kitchen appliances. Employees in this role are frequently exposed to hot water, potentially slippery floors, fire, and cleaning chemicals. Must be able to: walk, stand, use stairs and climb a ladder, bend, stoop, kneel and crouch; use arms, hands and fingers to hold utensils, sharp knives, and heavy pots and pans; pick up, hold, carry, and lift overhead up to 50 pounds; reach outward and overhead. Noise level is usually normal to occasionally loud; ability to hear and listen and speak clearly.
