    The Department of Human Development and Family Science provides leadership in the field via cutting edge research, pedagogy, and service.

    We are an interdisciplinary department focusing on individual, relationship, and family development within diverse ecological contexts.

    The department includes a Child Life Master's Program, Couple and Family Therapy Doctoral Program, Quantitative Methods in Family Science Certificate, and several dual degree opportunities (Double Dawgs).

    Faculty research interests and course offerings include infancy and childhood, adolescence and young adulthood, adult development and aging, parenting and caregiving, interpersonal relationships, health and biobehavioral processes, diversity and culture, and contexts of human development.

    We have a vibrant program with over 481 undergraduate majors, 48 graduate students, and 20 faculty operating in a collegial and supportive environment.

    We have a strong dedication to teaching and creating a sense of belonging for our faculty, staff, and students.     This position will be based in Athens, GA at the University of Georgia. Some travel may be required which may involve nights and weekend work. Travel expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with UGA policies.

    Position Summary


    The University of Georgia College of Family and Consumer Sciences Department of Human Development and Family Science is seeking applications for an Assistant Research Scientist.

    This position is a classified 9-month non-tenure track academic year appointment renewable annually pending grant funding.

    The position is funded by a grant from the Administration for Children and Families, Office of Family Assistance (OFA) through the University of Georgia (UGA), College of Family and Consumer Sciences.

    Continued funding for this position, after the end of the grant period, is contingent on obtaining other funding sources.

    August 1, 2024.


    The Assistant Research Scientist demonstrates a knowledge of the Human Development and Family Science discipline and is responsible for engaging in scholarly and creative research and evaluation.

    In collaboration with the Couple and Relationship Enrichment (CARE) Laboratory, the Assistant Research Scientist will be responsible for serving as a co-investigator on research projects, managing and analyzing data, writing and submitting manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, presenting at professional meetings, and pursuing external funding.

    The Assistant Research Scientist may also be asked to serve the department on issues related to research and methodology, supervise and mentor graduate students and serve on relevant committees.

    The allocation of effort at appointment will be 100% research/scholarship.

    Assistant Research Scientist must also adhere to the following standards and practices:


    • Compliance with good laboratory practices and recognized university standards, and timely completion of UGA required lab safety training programs.
    • Open and timely discussion with colleagues regarding research progress, distribution of reagents or materials, or any disclosure of findings or techniques privately or in publications.
    • Active participation in training and assessment activities.
    • Publication of research or scholarship during the period of the appointment, in consultation with his or her mentor.
    • Collegial conduct toward coworkers.
    • Compliance with all sponsor, UGA, and USG policies and procedures, including observation of established guidelines for research involving biohazards, human subjects, or animals.
    Additional Requirements

    Three years of postdoctoral research experience, including data analysis and a history of publications in peer-reviewed journals, is required.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    Familiarity with grant project management and involvement in research with children and families is preferred.
