Senior National Coordinator, Election Protection - Alexandria, United States - Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law

    Default job background
    Full time
    Description
The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is one of the nation's leading national racial justice legal organizations. Formed in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy, the Lawyers' Committee uses legal advocacy to achieve racial justice, fighting inside and outside the courts to ensure that Black people and other people of color have the voice, opportunity, and power to make the promises of our democracy real.

Job Title: Senior National Coordinator, Election Protection
Location: Hybrid; Remote Work in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, or Virginia
    Job Type: Full-Time

    About the Role:
The Voting Rights Project is the organization's largest programmatic unit, with a combination of attorneys, advocates, project managers, and technical specialists. Its work includes a range of litigation, policy, advocacy, and voter support efforts, including fulfilling the organization's role as convener of the National Election Protection Coalition—the nation's largest and longest-running non-partisan voter protection effort, comprised of nearly 400 organizations nationwide, with many working at the state and regional level.

Election Protection works throughout the year to provide information and resources to voters and combat barriers to the ballot box, with a focus on communities of color that have been historically disenfranchised by voter suppression efforts and subjected to increased efforts to stifle their voice and power in recent years. A key component of Election Protection is the 1-866-OUR-VOTE voter protection hotline and sister hotlines in Spanish, Arabic, and multiple Asian languages managed by partner organizations.

The Lawyers' Committee seeks a talented, dynamic, and enthusiastic organizer with at least three years of experience working directly with Black communities and other communities of color, to serve as a Senior National Coordinator for Election Protection and the Voting Rights Project ("VRP"). External candidates must be physically based in an assigned state and work remotely with the Lawyers' Committee team based in Washington D.C.

    What You'll be Doing:
Responsibilities of the Senior National Coordinator, Election Protection include but are not limited to:
  • Developing and implementing state-based voter protection and voting rights work in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Virginia.
  • Supporting the convening function for state election protection and voting rights coalitions in their work to advocate for election reform and promote best practices in election administration.
  • Implementing and overseeing Election Protection related campaigns nationally or in target states.
  • Developing grassroots advocacy and education strategies, recruiting and deploying legal and grassroots field volunteers.
  • Coordinating the 866-OUR-VOTE Hotline and various call centers.
  • Developing tools and materials for grassroots and coalition partners and developing outreach materials.
  • Providing organizing and strategic support under the guidance of the Manager of Campaigns and Field Programs, the Director of Campaigns and Field Programs, and the Co-Directors of the VRP.
  • Work with state partners and VRP attorneys to develop programs to detect discriminatory voting changes, identify emerging voting problems and develop responses to those problems.
  • Engage in public speaking on behalf of the organization and will sometimes participate in media opportunities.
  • Convene state-focused Election Protection coalition tables, related projects and specialty voter protection campaigns and provide the necessary infrastructure for success.
  • Facilitating coalition meetings, creating agendas, organizing resource materials, and ensuring coalition stays on track to meet goals.
  • Navigating relationship dynamics with national, state, and local coalition partners.
  • Serving as a liaison between the Election Protection Hotline to the state coalition.
  • Support the work of the national Election Protection coalition.
  • Implement and oversee voting rights focused campaigns nationally or in target states.
  • Designing campaign plans in response to voting rights issues impacting communities of interest.
  • Recruiting and empowering VRP team members to aid in the execution of campaign elements.
  • Representing the organization through public speaking opportunities.
  • Utilizing data to inform campaign design and implementation.
  • Serve as a resource to national coordinators.
  • Work as needed with other departments within the Lawyers' Committee to ensure programmatic success.
    Minimum Requirements and Competencies:
  • Minimum of four to five years of experience working to develop and successfully implement democracy-related campaigns (either political, non-partisan, issue-based, or candidate-focused) on the national and/or state level.
  • Deep and demonstrated commitment to the advancement of racial justice and civil rights.
  • Democracy-related campaign experience in Pennsylvania, North Carolina or Virginia.
  • Strong problem solving and people management skills with minimal supervision required, including but not limited to:
  • Ability to work with diverse coalitions and communities of color effectively
  • Ability to navigate and build consensus among groups
  • Strong communication skills including public speaking, writing and editing skills.
  • Detail-oriented, with strong organizational and program management skills, able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks effectively and meet tight deadlines.
  • Experience developing leadership of junior staff or volunteers.
  • Experience and training in community organizing.
  • Experience and comfort with technology infrastructure, including databases, volunteer management systems, and cloud-based systems.
  • Experience developing cross state or issue based campaigns.
