Executive Director, Immunology - San Francisco, United States - Eli Lilly and Company

    Default job background
    Description
At Lilly, we unite caring with discovery to make life better for people around the world. We are a global healthcare leader headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Our employees around the world work to discover and bring life-changing medicines to those who need them, improve the understanding and management of disease, and give back to our communities through philanthropy and volunteerism.

We give our best effort to our work, and we put people first. We're looking for people who are determined to make life better for people around the world.

At DICE Therapeutics, a wholly owned subsidiary of Eli Lilly, we design and develop innovative therapies in immunology for patients with debilitating disease.

Seeking to create a future where convenient oral medicines with biologic-like efficacy are available to patients with serious medical conditions, we are developing oral alternatives to medicines currently limited to injectable forms.

We have an open position to head a growing Immunology department. This group is responsible for target identification and biology leadership for all DICE programs.

Our Immunology scientists are experts in target biology and solve basic biology questions that relate to the inhibition of our targets with small molecule compounds.

They conceptualize novel assay systems for in vitro and in vivo testing of drug candidates and work in close collaboration with our in vitro pharmacology team to design assay cascades in support of drug development.

As a member of the research leadership team at DICE, this individual also has deep insight into and influence over all research related decisions.

Are you interested in working for a company that is developing groundbreaking science? Apply today to join the Lilly team

    Key Responsibilities

This individual will be responsible for all immunology aspects of our drug development programs.

In particular, they will assume the following responsibilities:

    • Identification of targets with a medium to high degree of validation, a clinical need for orally bioavailable medication, and a structural opportunity to develop small molecule inhibitors that will disrupt target function through allosteric or isosteric mechanisms
    • Oversight of design and implementation of research plans to prosecute those targets with biochemical, biophysical, cell based, and primary cell-based assays, as well as in vivo PD and efficacy modeling
    • Building of expertise around target biology, with particular focus on aspects that relate specifically to small molecule inhibition and how it might mimic or differ from antibody mediated inhibition
    • Mentoring and leading a team of currently 4 PhD level FTE dedicated to the aforementioned tasks
    • When appropriate, accomplish results through outsourcing efforts
    • Close collaboration with other groups within the Biology and Chemistry functions, such as in vitro pharmacology, structural biology, DMPK, and chemistry

    Minimum Requirements:

    • PhD degree in immunology or a related field
    • 10-15 years of proven experience in immunology and inflammation, with 5-10 years of that experience attained in an industrial setting
    • Demonstrated record of accomplishment in the form of publications, patents, or other quantifiable contributions to drug development.
    Preferences

    • Solid understanding of disease biology in major autoimmune and inflammatory indications.
    • Strong hands-on experience in immunological techniques and technologies (both in vitro and in vivo), as well as a desire to remain connected to the lab, are preferred.
    • Solid understanding of small molecule drug development
    • Member of one or several successful campaigns to identify a clinical candidate.
    • Keen attention to detail and a proclivity to think quantitatively are required for success in this role.
    • Outstanding communicator and a proven manager with strong interpersonal and mentoring skills.
