    Custodial/Events Support staff maintain cleanliness across various University facilities and assist with University events. Tasks vary based on campus needs, and overtime may be required. Core duties include cleaning, setup, and support for facilities and events. In addition, attendance at certain work-related events may be mandatory at the request of the University. Part-time hours, Saturday and Sunday: 8:00am to 4:30pm.

    Core Duties


    • Perform a variety of tasks to meet cleanliness standards set by the University,

    including but not limited to:
    picking up waste, cleaning up messes, vacuuming,

    mopping, dusting, cleaning of windows, carpet extraction, etc.; thoroughly and

    effectively clean restrooms, including sinks, toilets, urinals, showers, counters,

    floors, mirrors, etc.

    • Respond to special or emergency circumstances such as leaks and floods.
    • Perform special projects such as deep cleaning of areas and carpet/floor care.
    • Provides events and facilities support for assigned University sponsored events, both on
    and off campus.

    • Perform set-up, teardown, and turnover at event locations based on timing of the event; this includes transporting equipment, setting up tents, staging, chairs and tables, changing overall room layouts based on the purpose of the space, etc.
    • Depending on assigned route or projects, may clean specialty facilities and equipment
    on campus, such as athletic facilities, labs, kitchens, laundry rooms, showers,

    classrooms, study rooms, lobby areas, offices, and TV lounges.

    • Proactively report any facility issues to the appropriate shop or supervisor through the
    work order system.

    • Respond to special or emergency circumstances such as spills or health safety
    related situations which may include cleaning biomedical waste such as blood or

    vomit.

    • Remove trash from common areas, dump trash cans, and preform campus trash runs
    if needed. Help with recycling duties as needed.

    • Perform special projects during academic breaks; may include moving and setting up dorm room, office, and classroom furniture as needed to support University operations.
    • May fill in for other routes and tasks.
    • Review and respond to work orders received through the TMA computer system and complete assigned tasks - including any necessary follow-up or customer service.
    • Assist in maintaining cleanliness of Athletic facilities.
    Other duties as relevant to the duties of the position or as assigned by supervisor or supervisor's designee.

    Education & Experience


    • Preferred: high school diploma.
    • Preferred: a minimum of two years of custodial/events related experience.
    • Equivalent education/experience.
    Certifications & Licenses


    • Required: Active driver's license.

    • Ability to maintain good working relationships and exercise initiative and good judgment in organizing work and solving routine problems
    • Knowledgeable about all custodial methods, materials and equipment used in the work.
    • Knowledge of cleaning supplies, or ability to be trained in such areas.
    • Superior attention to detail.
    • Strong customer service orientation.
    • Excellent communication skills and ability to interact professionally with a variety of students, faculty, staff, and others.
    • Ability to speak, read, understand, and carry out labels, directions and work orders in English at level of proficiency required by the duties of this position.
    • Excellent commonsense and ability to use good judgment to carry out written or oral instructions, generally in a sequence or with scheduled work activities occurring on a regular basis.
    • Ability to operate cleaning equipment such as vacuums, ride-on vacuums, carpet extractors, and other cleaning equipment as necessary.
    • Ability to do minor vacuum and equipment repair is not required but preferred.
    • Ability to learn and apply applicable University and other applicable policies. Knowledge of FERPA and Title IX policies or ability to be trained in such area.
    • Ability to establish effective working relationships, professional rapport, and effectively accomplish work within a University setting that includes a wide array of individuals, groups, policies, and processes.
    • Competence with and commitment to diversity and inclusion; ability to be an effective partner with diverse students, faculty, and staff.
    • Effective ability to use and learn computers, technology, software, and applications at level of sophistication required for the duties of the position, including, without limitation, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), the internet, and computerized maintenance management systems.
    • All University of Portland positions require the ability to quickly learn and use new technologies, software, and applications in depth and at level of proficiency required for duties of the position. In most situations, the necessity of learning, using, and supporting new technologies, software, and/or applications does not change a job description nor make the position one that involves higher level duties.
    Physical Requirements


    • Frequently: while performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, twist, bend, use fingers and hands to handle materials, tools, and/or equipment, and reach with hands and/or arms.
    • Frequently: the employee must lift, move, or use items or equipment ranging from ten to thirty pounds with or without assistance (such as garbage, vacuum cleaners, cleaning supplies, water buckets, floor machines, etc.).
    • Occasionally: the employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
    • Occasionally: the employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance and with or without the use of devices and/or equipment to assist in the lifting effort.
    • When lifting is required, employees are asked to use good judgment, make safety a top priority, and ask for assistance of others or relevant equipment as necessary.
    Working Conditions


    • Hours: Part-time hours, 16 hours per week.
    • Environmental: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes and airborne particles; bodily waste and blood borne pathogens; and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock and works with vibration causing tools or equipment.
    • Noise: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
