About Sam White:
My name is Sam White. I am a native Detroiter with over 20 years of experience in the entertainment industry, spanning theater, academia, journalism, and corporate communications. As the founder of Shakespeare in Detroit, I have dedicated my career to innovative and inclusive storytelling, blending a deep respect for classical theater with fresh perspectives that engage diverse audiences.
Beyond my work in the arts, my background includes serving as an Assistant Professor of MFA Directing, writing for major publications, and contributing to the automotive industry as a writer. My ability to connect with broad audiences has been recognized by major media outlets such as the BBC and Forbes, and my productions have received national acclaim—including recognition from The New York Times.
Now looking to bring my experience and leadership to Los Angeles, I am eager to continue creating impactful work that bridges tradition with the future of entertainment.
Experience
The award-winning director and administrator has trained in the Michael Langham Workshop for Classical Direction at the Stratford Festival (Ontario, Canada), the Director's Intensive at Yale (New Haven, CT), and served as the Paul Nicholson Arts Management Fellow at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. She has directed at the regional Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival as well as The Old Globe (San Diego). She has also taught in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) and previously served as an Assistant Professor of MFA Directing at Indiana University (Bloomington), one of the nation's top theatre training programs.
In addition to leading Shakespeare in Detroit, White directed Wedding Band by Alice Childress at the Stratford Festival in 2023. The New York Times review praised her production, stating:
“It was always a tragedy for the couple and, by implication, the country, whose attempts to encompass all races in a loving union have been notably fitful and remain unfinished. But the director Sam White’s production unexpectedly adds another layer of tragedy. Her staging emphasizes the hard-won pleasures of the central relationship, so that something valuable is felt to be lost when the world intervenes. But distinctively it also suggests the tragedy of the white characters — especially the man’s mother and sister — who are nominally the villains.”
Sam White has given two TEDx talks, won the Breakthrough Award from the National Association of Women Business Owners, 40 Under 40 from Crain's Detroit Business, and the 40 Under 40 award from The Michigan Chronicle, along with recognition from Corp! magazine, Encore Michigan, and the City of Detroit.
Education
My enrichment courses at Yale, Stratford and The Old Globe have been the most relevant educational experiences.
