I aim to understand the functional mechanisms underlying organismal performance. Using experimental approaches, hydrodynamic modeling and physical theory, I identify the functional components that contribute to performance, then apply these insights into the functional system in order to investigate broad questions pertaining to the ways in which functional diversity has evolved and is maintained, and to unravel the general principles that underlie the evolution of complex functional systems.
