Under supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in providing technical/clerical support to detention staff within the County Jail; performs related work as assigned.


This position offers a starting pay of $41,600 annually, with an increase to $42,848 after completion of OJT, and $44,134 after one year as a Detention Support Specialist.**
There is a signing bonus up to $2000.

Typical Duties:
  • (Illustrative Only)
  • Controls entry to and exit from the detention center in accordance with established procedures
  • Monitors that firearms and ammunition are secured in the gun locker
  • Performs visual security checks of inmate housing areas
  • Schedules inmate visitation
  • Sorts and delivers mail to the housing units, processes mail for proper addresses, contraband, money orders, etc.
  • Reviews booking forms, inmate records, and court documents for accuracy and completeness
  • Examines and interprets court orders and release documents to verify validity of each prisoner release
  • Conducts manual and automated criminal history checks
  • Enters property information, releases inmate property/monies as needed;
  • Communicates appropriate inmate information, jail policies and procedures to the public by phone or in person
  • Monitors inmate population, especially during officerinmate contact situations
  • Enters inmate data into the Jail Management Information system
  • Receives funds, maintains accounts, and performs general clerical functions as needed
  • Monitors security cameras and audio equipment
  • Operates communications equipment, including two way radio


Essential functions of this position include but are not limited to: sitting for computer entry, typing, answering telephones, etc; working with and around other staff, administration, inmates and citizens, etc; dealing with interruptions; repetitive motion (hand / wrist) for computer and phone work; vision acuity (near / far); hearing and speech for ordinary conversation; touch and finger dexterity for using radios, intercoms, telephones and computers.

Environmental conditions include working inside, in warm area during spring and summer.


Minimum Qualifications:

Must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien. Must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment to the position. Must be a high school graduate or possess a G.E.D.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must submit to a background search and successfully pass polygraph examination. Must not have a felony conviction within previous ten years or dishonorable discharge from the military. Must not have a misdemeanor conviction involving domestic violence within previous five years. Must not have used dangerous/narcotic drugs in the past five years for more than experimentation.


Preferred qualifications include previous work experience in law enforcement or the military.

This position is non-exempt from overtime.
This position is safety sensitive.

Working knowledge of:


  • Detention facility operational policies and procedures
  • Security systems and procedures
  • Detention facility related software, i.e. ILEADS, ACJIS
  • Modern office procedures and practices
  • Cash handling procedures

Skill in:


  • Use of computers and word processing software
  • Use of multiline phone system
  • English grammar, spelling and arithmetic
  • Office machine operation including cash register

Ability to:


  • Prepare and maintain reports, records, forms, and logbooks
  • Works safely and support the culture of workplace safety
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public
  • Follow written and verbal instructions
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
