Department Summary:

Bruin Woods was founded in 1985 as a fun retreat for UCLA Alumni to reconnect with their alma mater and introduce their families to our beloved traditions.

UCLA Lake Arrowhead Lodge property is nestled on 50 wooded acres on the north shore of beautiful Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino Mountains.

The Bruin Woods Family Camp program runs for 10 consecutive weeks each summer, with up to 80 families attending weekly.

Bruin Woods has maintained its reputation as the top alum family camp in the country through an ongoing commitment to superb hospitality and service.

We aim to create an environment for families to bond and grow, where kids can be kids and parents can join in all the fun, too.


Position Summary:


At Bruin Woods, the role of Lifeguards is indispensable in guaranteeing the safety of our esteemed guests and their families.

The Lifeguard is responsible for carrying out public relations and guest services duties, enforcing and promoting safety, performing emergency response procedures, and ensuring facility maintenance.


Salary & Compensation:
*UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Qualifications:

  • Must be knowledgeable of principles and techniques of: Preventive lifeguarding, water rescues, first aid, and CPR. (required)
  • Ability to swim with proficiency and endurance, analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective course of action. (required)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with diverse populations with competing priorities. Knowledge of where to find important information within the organization and the ability to discern and communicate relevant information. (required)
  • Skill in interacting effectively with guests, team members, and managers in a highvolume, public setting using positive body language, direct eye contact, active listening, and friendly and professional demeanor. (required)
  • Ability to remain calm in the face of adversity, such as customer dissatisfaction or emergency (required)
  • Ability to identify potential hazards and mitigate these risks to prioritize safety. (required)
  • Possess exceptional customer relations skills, with a demonstrated ability to provide exemplary guest service and anticipate their needs. (required)
  • Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with employees at various levels. (required)
  • Ability to engage with diverse populations in a respectful and culturally responsive manner (required)
  • Ability to sufficiently communicate in written and verbal English to receive work assignments and share information with supervisors and colleagues (required)
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fastpaced environment with a fluctuating workload (required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications, & Professional Affiliations:

  • Current American Red Cross (ARC) (or equivalent) Lifeguard Training & First Aid and CPR/AED for Lifeguards Certifications Within 30 days of employment or at first available training (required)
  • ARC Blood Bourne Pathogens, ARC Lifeguard Instructor, ARC Water Safety Instructor Certification(s) (preferred)

  • Must be available to work varying schedules, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime based on departmental needs (required)
  • Ability to swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, complete a timed swimming event within 50 seconds, and tread water for 2 minutes (required)
