The Most Dangerous Weapon in the World
Have you ever wondered what the most dangerous type of any weapon in the entire world is? Some people reading this might be picturing a hydrogen bomb or maybe bombs created during World War II encased with bubonic plague, cholera, smallpox, botulism, anthrax, and other diseases. How about a weapon that causes a famine or controls the weather? The answer is actually the âHuman Tongueâ. In this article I want to give examples of what I mean.
Some of you might be puzzled. But, letâs stop and think about this for a moment. Harry S. Truman said, âIt is understanding that gives us an ability to have peace. When we understand the fellowâs viewpoint, and he understandâs our, then we can sit down and work out our differences.â Because people communicate in so many ways, we many times lack the patience to understand someone else, which can lead to anger.
As a American, I support our 1st Amendment 100%. This amendment guarantees the rights of free expression and action that are fundamental to democratic government. These rights include freedom of assembly, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, and freedom of speech. Yet there are many people who want to turn this "Freedom of Speech" into a "Freedom from Speech" because they of harm they feel. Instead of silencing others, we need to educated ourselves and each other how to use our great voices.
âBut now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.â (Colossians 3:8) . This verse speaks also of great communication.
Now here is second phrase you may have heard, âSticks and stones can hurt my bones, yet words can never hurt me.â This is quite the opposite. Words can do the most damage. Our wounds can heal from physical wounds, yet a wound to the heart may stay with someone forever. Did someone every say something to you as a child, and it is still with you today? I, myself, had this happen. I forgave this person, so the pain is gone, yet the memory is still there.
Now imagine someone speaking harmful to you. It is like them you a dart inside a blow-dart and aiming right at you. Sometimes, people donât realize what they are saying is harmful and is like shooting little darts over the front of us like porcupines. If someone is really angry, they will aim for your heart, like a poison dart. A blow-dart is used by inserting the projectile inside the pipe (known as a blowgun) and using the force created by oneâs breath to give the projectile momentum. Its propulsive power is limited by the userâs respiratory muscles. In this case, the dart is the words and the powers could be the person tone of voice or manner in which it is used. Negative Self-talk can be the same type of weapon. The blowgun in just curved to aim back at yourself. My parents taught me the quote above as, "Sticks and Stones may break my bones, Yet only I choose to let words hurt me." We have that ability to take those 'darts', out of those 'blowguns'.
Most wars are fought over serious issues like territory, resources or political freedom, but others arise from bizarre and even comical circumstances. Over the years, armies have mobilized and blood has been shed over everything from tragic misunderstandings and perceived slights to petty border disputes and even sporting events. Here are some, I wonât go into details: The Toledo War (1803-1836), The War of Jenkinsâ Ear (1738-1748), The War of the Stray Dog (1910-1925), The Nika Riot (January 532 AD), and The Pig War (1859). These wars began over ridiculous reasons were also do to just bad communication. The Tongue was the weapon that started the war and the deaths of everyone during it.
Just imagine today at airports, and border portals. We are searching people passing through for guns, knives, and explosives. Yet, each person walks through with their really weapon, their mouth. Good Communication is essential for getting the most out of life. So the question is how we turn our mouths into an instrument of peace. It is by understanding communication. âBy wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established.â (Proverbs 24:3)
I go more in detail in a later article, yet hereâs one example of miscommunication: one person communicates through their feelings while the other is just the facts. Misunderstanding can develop when we are at opposite ends of these type of styles. Yet, if we allow freedom for differences in communication, we can promote healthy communication by adjusting our style to honor each other.
SO HOW DO I DISARM MY TONGUE:
ââŠlet every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.â (James 1:19)
Four Tips for expressing yourself safetly:
- Think before you speak. âA man has joy in an apt answer, and how delightful is a timely wordâ (Proverbs 15:23)
- Not everything you are feeling needs to be expressed. Sometimes silence is best
- Ask to make sure you are being understood
- Speak in a way that encourages. âLet no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.â (Ephesians 4:29)
Clearly, there are many different ways that people communicate. By opening yourself up to different people and styles of expressing yourself, you will learn how to communicate better. Communication is key. When there is communication, conflict is less likely and love can be a better path to understanding.
