Puppies and kittens are usually the first to be snatched up at animal shelters, which is great news for them! Unfortunately, older animals often sit in shelters for weeks, months, or even years waiting to be adopted. There’s really no good reason for this, since there are many benefits that come along with adopting older animals. Here are just a few.

• They have a well-established temperament.

Older animals have outgrown the puppy and kitten stage and have established their temperament by now. On your part, there’s no guesswork as to whether they will be good with children and other pets, as they have likely been exposed to all of those situations already.

• You know what size they’ll be full-grown.

If you live in an apartment or other small space, you may be limited as to how big your animals can get. Many complexes only allow animals up to 50 pounds. Older animals are full-grown so you know that what you see is what you get and you won’t need to worry about them outgrowing your space.

• They’re probably already trained.

Potty training is one of the biggest hurdles new pet owners have to overcome, particularly with dogs. Older animals likely know by now not to go to the bathroom inside of the house, so that’s one less stress you’ll have as a pet owner. They may also know basic commands or have formal training to follow more in-depth commands, making them even easier to care for.

• They’re more relaxed.

Younger animals can be quite rambunctious, which is great for a pet owner who has the time to exercise them daily. For pet owners who would prefer a more relaxed animal, older pets are an excellent choice. They’re wonderful for cuddling up with and are sure to keep you warm on even the chilliest days.

• You’re giving them a second chance.

Just because an older animal was dropped off at a shelter doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with them. The circumstances surrounding their surrender may have nothing to do with them. By adopting those older animals, you’re giving them a second chance at life and the opportunity to live out their days in a loving home.
