More than conquerors
Romans 8:37 clearly teaches us that we are more than conquerors. So why is it we fail to conquer? Why do we fulfill what we see written in Romans 7 “but what I hate, that I do”?
This truth radiates throughout the Christian experience, we know that we can and should overcome the issues we face like anger or hate or even lust but we fail to overcome and find ourselves shame faced before God saying why did I fail? We know the teachings found in Romans 8, we know that we stand with all the power to prevail, yet we fail.
The reason we fail is that we accept the lie. We choose to believe something faults. Now the exact wording of the lie we choose to believe will change for each person as the lie is very carefully crafted for each person. But the nature of the lie is always the same; we choose to believe our wisdom over Gods.
Our wisdom is based on our current perception of the situation. We gather information and process that information based on what we know what we want and what we see. All of that information is gathered from our perspective and current mind set. Both of these can be manipulated.
Proverbs 3:5 was written because of this very real truth. We cannot lean on our own understanding and obtain the results that agree with the righteousness of God. The lie we believe generally has within it something like this; I have a right, they have wronged me, I am simply curious, or the notorious what could go wrong. These me centered concepts trust one person above all others, me.
The reason we fail is not because we do not have the power to succeed, we fail because we choose to believe we have the power. The power is not in us, it is in the God we serve. When we become the god we serve God will not empower us to overcome. Romans 8 has the very real context that we are serving God and not ourselves. Romans 7 is dealing with the reality that our flesh or carnal nature likes to influence our perception. It is for that very reason that we are told to trust God’s understanding of the situation and not to lean on our own.
We are conquerors. We will overcome. We simply need to remember who to trust so His power is available to enable us to stand.
