Sadie heard the commotion downstairs. It was loud enough to disturb her tenants. Sadie took her responsibility to her tenants seriously. Then there was her son who put up with the constant abuse this woman dealt out. She feared for everyone—including herself.

Sadie made her way downstairs slowly, carefully. Age forced this. One stair at a time towards danger. Her heart revolted—blood plunging through it with anticipation. She was afraid.

Sadie had already lost one tenant due to her son’s girlfriend’s drug-addled dementia. She couldn’t afford to lose another. The woman slammed doors so violently the house trembled, and she screamed her rage at empty ears. It happened so often almost nobody listened.

Sadie entered the second floor with trepidation. Each step towards the commotion in the front of the house was laced with fear. Her son was not going to stop anything. He knew of his mother’s plight and did nothing. It was up to her. Finally, she was there.

The door to the front room stuck. It was damaged. Fleeting thoughts of the costs to repair the damage this woman caused ran through her mind. Sadie became angry.

Sadie flung the door open and loudly told the woman:

“You have to stop this.”

“I don’t have to stop anything,” the woman screamed. “I’m thirty-two years old.”

Sadie had no idea what age had to do with common decency. Her emotions roiled inside her. This was her turf—her castle, and she would defend it—her tenants—her son.

Sadie moved in close to the woman, giving her an angry glare.

“You have to stop,” she said.

Split second—the younger woman head-butted the old woman in the nose—knocking her to the floor.

Sadie lie there, stunned at her own frailty. How rude for age to steal her ability to keep things livable and safe. The devil was not at her doorstep, she was in her house, and it appeared there was nothing Sadie could do about it.

Time slowed, and Sadie grappled her way up from the floor, blood bursting from her nose as she did so. She stood, wiping the stream coming from her nose. Her son finally sprung into action, holding the woman back.

This is elder abuse—when the young and stronger move in to take what’s not theirs—when they hurt those unable to defend themselves—when they move in for the kill.
Sadie finally resorted to the system of courts to keep the young woman away. One would think the frail would engender compassion, but this is not always so.

Ah, when the young stir their blood in fury and transgress all limits of courtesies, then they need to be disciplined. Abusing elders is after all grave mischief.

not all the time, but yes majority are frustrated to mistreat others and many who find it hard to deal with it have enough bad experiences to hold on to and feel miserable. Sometimes they need that anchor to get back up and get over it to give strength to similar people around them. It is not just the bloodied nose, it is the entire circumstance wherein a headbutt by an angry girl becomes a representation of constant exploitation which has been going on for a while due to disrespect, negligence and mistreatment.

AARP engaged a campaign in which they asked millennials what age is old? http://www.aarp.org/disrupt-aging/stories/ideas/info-2016/what-is-old-video.html If this is the beginning point then imagine how acute the end point of elder abuse is. One the one hand AARP shone a light on outdated beliefs but the beliefs in this video are benign and can be changed, what this video shows me is that like other types of abuse, the journey to transformation has a very long road. Even eastern cultures that move to the West are not immune to neglectful and indifferent views about elders. The irony is that when elders are considered legends then they get to live out their passions well into their 90's, three examples John Wooden Peter Drucker W.Edward Deming Yet if an elder is on the scrapheap of the career path our attitudes are all contributory, because if we have accepted that system that treats life as working or retired, the meaning of retired is not at all what it is for an individual who can afford it. How does Wooden, Drucker and Deming lead full lives across their life path, but our attitudes to elders get disconnected by the very systems that we accept as the norm?

yes it is my point how this is not detected thru a solid hiring process, thourough refs and background checks

Pascal Derrien This was more a story of predator and prey. It's a shame our elderly are preyed upon.

Joyce \ud83d\udc1d Bowen This is a sad and tragic plight of the elderly. I have seen video footage of abuse in old age homes; it angers me immensely. Thanks for posting Joyce and raising awareness on this social issue which so often goes hidden and unreported.

I am really questionning the hiring process first and then the life span of one in those particular jobs, I think the emotional well being of both the ''customer'' and the people working in that field need to be reassed on a regular basis , it is a duty of care for both. I have stopped working in the homeless field after 11 years (as volunteer) because I realized it was becoming more and more difficult to cope, now it was 2 evenigns a week so I can imagine day on a 365 day basis having said abuse is inacceptable in any shape or form

This is a heart-breaking buzz Joyce \ud83d\udc1d Bowen. You summarized the buzz beautifully in your writing "This is elder abuse—when the young and stronger move in to take what’s not theirs—when they hurt those unable to defend themselves—when they move in for the kill". This is a sad reality. Only yesterday somebody killed his mother to steal her money. You raise the flag on a very important issue.
