Stormwater Field Technician/Crew Member
The
Southern Parks Division Stormwater Management Team oversees the maintenance of about 300 stormwater facilities.

The team is responsible for the non-structural maintenance of various types of stormwater best management practices, including bioretention facilities, rain gardens, landscape infiltrations, dry ponds, wet ponds, sand filters, infiltration trenches, and bioswales.

The typical maintenance work includes weeding and planting vegetated facilities, mowing the embankment of ponds, maintaining control structures free of trash and debris, removing vegetation growing on sand filters and gravel infiltration facilities, collecting trash from all facilities, removing accumulated sediment, and performing erosion repairs.

Examples of Important Duties:


  • Coordinate on the field the daytoday activities to complete stormwater facility maintenance tasks according to the Department of Environment Protection standards. Work on a variety of stormwater management facilities installed in the Southern Region of Montgomery Parks.
  • Training staff in plant identification and proper gardening care, equipment operation, landscaping, and safety procedures and practices.
  • Demonstrate and enforce safe working practices and use of personal protection equipment including eye protection, hearing protection, work gloves, and steeltoed boots.
  • Planting trees, shrubs, grasses, and flowers according to established standards.
  • Operate truck and trailer combinations.
  • Perform routine safety inspections and routine basic maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

Important Skills and Characteristics:


  • Knowledge of principles in stormwater management including types of stormwater management facilities; basic design; and routine maintenance tasks.
  • Experience operating equipment required to perform stormwater facilities preventive maintenance.
  • Formal training or education in stormwater management, gardening, landscaping, and knowledge of park general maintenance operation, safety, turf maintenance, basic vehicle and equipment maintenance, cleaning agents and cleaning procedures, and Commission organization, policies, and procedures*.
  • Basic computer skills will be necessary to receive and track work tasks.
  • Developed primarily after employment in this job class.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance or park maintenance.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total four (4) years.
  • Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of their position.
  • Pass Commission medical examination.
  • Depending upon the area of assignment, some positions in this class require within 12 months of hire (a) Commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements; (b) obtainment of certifications including:

Working Conditions:

Primarily works outdoors.

Work conditions may include exposure to dust, vibration, noise, chemicals, dirt, waste, odors, pesticides, wildlife, potentially harmful insects (for example, bees, hornets, wasps, etc.) as well as exposure to adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, snow, rain, etc.).
