    Deputy Director - Death Penalty Clinic - School of Law

    Position description

    The Berkeley Law Death Penalty Clinic seeks applications for a Clinic Deputy Director. This is a non-tenure track position with the possibility of renewal. This is an in-person position.

    This position requires a minimum of six (6) years of post-graduate experience in the Clinic's substantive practice area. Under the supervision of the Clinic Co-Directors, the Deputy Director's general responsibilities include training and supervising students in client representation, assisting in teaching the Clinic's companion seminar, and playing a substantial role in administering the Clinic, including development and management of the Clinic docket.

    The Berkeley Law Death Penalty Clinic is one of the few clinics nationwide engaged in the defense of indigent clients facing the death penalty. Under the direct supervision of clinical faculty, clinic students learn first-hand the responsibility and skills required to defend individuals in capital cases. Students gather life history documents, conduct fact investigation, interview witnesses, and collaborate with experienced capital investigators and a variety of forensic experts. They research and draft legal pleadings, and assist in hearings and trials in courts ranging from state trial courts to the United States Supreme Court and in jurisdictions as diverse as Alabama, California, Georgia, Texas, and Virginia.

    Students are enrolled in the Death Penalty Clinic for the entire academic year. They also take a required companion seminar taught by the Clinic faculty.

    The Death Penalty Clinic is committed to building an equitable and inclusive faculty and staff to teach and work in a multicultural learning environment. The law school provides support for Deputy Directors to attend conferences to advance their professional development goals and interests.

    DUTIES

    Under the supervision of the Clinic Co-Directors, the Deputy Director will be responsible for:

    Clinic Supervision and Advocacy (60%)
    • Develop and manage Clinic docket projects/cases
    • Co-design and co-teach the Clinic companion seminar
    • Train and supervise 6-8 Clinic students per semester
    • Develop and maintain Clinic relationships with clients, partners, co-counsel, funders, alumni, and other stakeholders
    • Travel and offsite meetings as needed with Clinic students to work with clients/partners

    Clinic Administration (30%)
    • General Clinic administration, including interfacing with law school and campus staff
    • Program planning and accountability to clients and partners
    • Plan, implement, and maintain procedures, systems, and policies, including but not limited to email, calendaring, and record-keeping
    • Assist with budget planning and compliance, including fundraising and grant reporting
    • Conceptualize and organize internal and external Clinic events and outreach to prospective students, alumnx, and other constituencies
    • Develop, maintain, and promote Clinic media relations (including social media)

    Other Duties as Assigned (10%)
    • Perform other duties as needed

    UC Field Work Supervisors are academic appointees in an organized bargaining unit and are exclusively represented by the American Federation of Teachers - Unit 18.

    Qualifications
    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
    • J.D. or equivalent international degree.


    Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
    • A minimum of six (6) years of post-graduate experience
    • Admission to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction


    Preferred qualifications
    • Ability to appear pro hac vice in jurisdictions in which the Clinic practices
    • Post-graduate experience in the field of capital defense and/or law school clinical teaching
    • At least three years of experience in clinical teaching or other law student supervision
    • At least three years of experience in program administration
    • Excellent research, writing, and oral advocacy skills
    • Demonstrated analytical, organizational, and planning skills
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Experience working with diverse communities, clients and other stakeholders
