    Summary

    This position is part of the Office of Science - Headquarters, Department of Energy. As the Senior Fire Protection Engineer, you will be the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC), Office of Safety and Security (SC-41), Technical Safety Team.

    Duties

    As a Fire Protection Engineer, you will:
    • Provide expertise in the application of codes and standards for the development, oversight and implementation of contractors' fire protection programs, oversight and support for construction projects as well as the identification and application of unique fire protection engineering and technical standards and practices.
    • Perform as a Senior Fire Protection Engineer, providing consultative or project coordinator services and making nuclear and non-nuclear facilities and safety systems surveys concerning fire protection engineering.
    • Advise on concepts, designs, and quality in the broad area of fire protection engineering; and exercises significant advisory decision authority for the organization in design development and construction of facilities.
    • Formulate and develop new fire protection engineering hypothesizes, criteria, guidance, and coordinates this with interested and mandatory personnel and organizations.
    • Ensure assigned fire protection systems are in accordance with applicable regulations, technical safety requirement, and performs assessments and investigations in meeting established safety and mission requirements.
    • Participate in meetings, conferences, and symposia of engineering organizations to plan long range engineering programs.
    Requirements

    • This position does not support 100% remote work. You will be required to report physically to the official reporting worksite as specified by the supervisor, but no less than 2 days per pay period.

    • This position is included in the DOE's Technical Qualification Program (TQP). Required to meet core, position, and site specific technical qualification standards within 12 to 18 months from date of placement in the position.
    Qualifications

    BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

    A. Degree: professional engineering. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in 5 of the 7 areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials; and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

    OR

    B. Combination of education and experiencecollege level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) thorough knowledge of physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and (2) good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following:

    1. Professional registration-Current registration as a professional engineer by any State, District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Absent other means of qualifying under this standard, those applicants who achieved such registration by means other than written test are eligible only for positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration.

    2. Written Test-Evidence of having successfully passed the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) exam, or written test required for professional registration, which is administered by the Boards of Engineering Examiners in the various States, District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico.

    3. Specified academic courses-Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an engineering program as described in paragraph A.

    4. Related curriculum-Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. Ordinarily there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions

    In addition to the basic education requirement, candidates must also meet the following specialized experience:

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as:
    • providing guidance and interpretation of building codes, life safety codes, and National Fire Protection Association codes and standards.
    • conducting fire alarm and signaling system inspections, tests, and maintenance.
    • creating nuclear and non-nuclear facilities and safety system surveys concerning fire protection engineering.
