Position Overview:
SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory's (SLAC) Facilities and Operations (F&O) Division manages one of the world's premier science facilities on a 400-acre Stanford site with 150+ structures comprised of office and research facilities for the Department of Energy.
We are a service organization committed to the support and success of the Laboratory's Scientific Mission by providing safe and responsive engineering, construction, operations, and maintenance of equipment, buildings, and infrastructure.
The Electrical Power Department within our Facilities and Operations Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the SLAC Electrical Infrastructure used to support SLAC's scientific mission.
We are seeking a Facilities Engineer with a strong background in electrical power control and protection engineering to design, construct, operate, and maintain electrical control systems for power distribution.
This position reports to the Electrical Power Control and Protection Lead.Your specific responsibilities include:
Serve as the technical expert in the performance of facilities engineering responsibilities involving electrical protection and control during planning, design, construction, modification, operation, maintenance, and utility servicing of campus facilities.
Perform System studies, and provide protection requirements for design, review, and approvals of one-line, schematics, and logic diagrams.
Collaborate with other engineering disciplines Electrical designers, project engineers, and Operation and Maintenance engineers to support operation and maintenance and substation automation and infrastructure projects.
Gather and evaluate data of electrical systems; model systems on ETAP software for different electrical studies such as short circuits, coordination, arc flash, etc.
Issue setting for substation relays and different types of breakers via ETAP, and support test technicians in testing and commissioning of those protective devices.
Analyze fault and nuisance trips using historical data such as digital relay & and meter records or other related data.
Review and analyze daily relay operations to determine correct operation or mis operation in responding to an electrical system disturbance or anomalies.
Serve as an expert, providing design and technical recommendations in the area(s) of specialization. This may include the development and implementation of programs and systems and interfacing and coordination with/across specialties and disciplines.
Identify and resolve complex electrical protection and control systems issues that may have high visibility and/or high risk/consequences of failure.
Prepare, review, and analyze projects' technical plans and specifications for sound design, conformance with design guidelines and other related criteria, and pertinent codes or standards.
Conduct risk assessments and develop contingency plans.
Serve as a technical lead on electrical protection oriented projects in the area(s) of expertise across multiple disciplines, and/or contractor activities, through all project phases.
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or relevant engineering discipline.
Minimum ten years of directly related experience in the field of high voltage substation design and, particularly protection relaying and equipment control.
Proficient in using ETAP, SKM or other related software.knowledge of electrical SCADA protocols, such as DNP3, Modbus, and IEC
Familiarity with electrical power systems and substation automation.
Ability to analyze complex electrical protection problems and provide effective solutions for the resolution.
Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to cultivate strong and collaborative relationships inside and outside the organization.
Proficiency with standard desktop applications for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.
Knowledge of scheduling, project management tools, and resources.
Knowledge and proficiency with electrical calculations software related to assignments (ETAP, EMTP, PSCAD).
Understanding and ability to perform/evaluate protection and control equipment lifecycle cost analysis.
Deep technical knowledge in the area of expertise.
Demonstrated ability to monitor and control project scope, schedule, and budget.
Ability to identify and mitigate potential project risk components.
In addition, preferred requirements include:
Experience with Electrical Systems Network and Firewall Requirements and associated designs.
Development of advanced substation automation and associated logic schemes.
Substation HMI development
Substation P&C setting and design experience.
Certification and License:

The expected pay range for this position is $136,000 - $172,000 per annum.
