Description

  • Reports to the Pharmacy Manager.
Under the clinical supervision of a licensed pharmacist and in accordance with departmental policies, procedures and legal and regulatory requirements, and enters prescription data into the computer, verifies insurance on-line, fills pharmaceuticals for dispensing and ensures delivery of products and pharmaceutical supplies to patients in a retail environment which will include point of sale responsibilities. Maintains pharmacy working inventory.

Assists the pharmacist to prepare and dispense prescription and patient orders by:

  • Receiving customer and prescription information required to process new, refill and transfer prescriptions.
  • Performing computer entry of prescription information including but not limited to: patient search, prescriber search, drug selection, prescription interpretation and entry, insurance verification and basic problem resolution.
  • Answering telephones and taking messages for patient prescription requests and related pharmacy business.
  • Managing and monitoring customer flow.
  • Providing excellent customer service to all patients and medical professionals via phone or in person.
  • Retrieving, counting, and bottling medications.
  • Dispensing filled prescriptions to customers and processing payments (i.e., cash/credit transactions).
  • Maintaining the dispensing robot.
  • Selecting from stock areas, medications for individual patients based on computergenerated information.
  • Selecting from stock areas, medications for newly received patient and refill prescriptions based on computergenerated labels and/or reports and verbal and written instructions.
  • Selecting and verifying accuracy of medications to be replaced in unitbased automated dispensing cabinets.
  • Generating reports, pick lists and labels as required.

Maintains working inventory within established department guidelines by:

  • Reviewing stock levels and recording for order.
  • Removing stock from storage areas and replenishing active use areas.
  • Routinely checking storage areas for outdated product, removing from stock and placing in designated areas according to departmental policies.

Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:

  • Performing other job related duties and projects as assigned.
  • Performing inspections of assigned patient care areas using printed guidelines.
  • Collecting data, conducting quality monitors and completing documentation as assigned.
  • Maintaining logs, records and other required documentation accurately, filing documents in appropriate locations.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:


Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent and successful completion of a pharmacy technician training program approved by the State of Indiana.

Current certification through the State of Indiana is required.

Certification as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) must be acquired within one year of licensure with the State of Indiana.

A minimum of one year experience working as a Pharmacy Technician in a retail environment with duties to have included new prescription processing, POS and insurance verification is preferred.
