Summary/Objective

The Staff Accountant provides general ledger support to the University, while upholding department policy and internal controls. This position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including: general journal entries, account reconciliations, financial reporting, year-end audit preparation and the support of budget activities.

Essential Job Duties

· Performs assigned journal entries and reconciliations

· Assists the Controller with the management of user access to the general ledger

· Assists departments across all SBU campuses to access budget information and financial activity

· Assists with the Retention Policies for the University's accounting records

· Works with the Controller to ensure a clean and timely year-end audit

· Supports Controller with special projects and continuous process improvements

· Supports the Accounting Services Department in its move to a paperless environment

· Demonstrates a commitment and adherence to Southwest Baptist University's Principles and Expectations

· None

Position Requirements

Education, training or experience needed to effectively perform the job. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered. Knowledge, skills and abilities may be representative, but not all-inclusive, of those commonly associated with this position.

Required

· B.S. or B.A. in Business Administration or Accounting

· Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)

· Proficient in the use of Outlook, Word, and Adobe with advanced skills preparing complex worksheets using Excel features

· Strong analytical skills and attention to detail

· Strong interpersonal skills to interact with employees, students and parties external to the University in a Christ-like manner

· Effective writing and communication skills

· Ability to prioritize work and perform tasks independently

Preferred

· B.S. or B.A. with a concentration in Accounting with 2 years of experience

· Prior experience working in Higher Education

· Prior experience working with Colleague by Ellucian

Work Environment

· Typical office environment with moderate noise (i.e. business office with computers, phones, and printers, light traffic)

Physical Abilities

· Ability to, stand, sit; talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone

· Must be able to remain in a seated position up to 50% of the time

· Ability to reach, stoop, and kneel to access file cabinets and office machinery on a daily basis

· Ability to see a computer screen and complete close work on spreadsheets

· Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

· Ability to maintain regular, predictable attendance

· Ability to focus on complex formulas and communicate complex financial information to internal and external parties on a daily basis with multiple interruptions
