At Boston Medical Center (BMC), our diverse staff works together for one goal — to provide exceptional and equitable care to improve the health of the people of Boston.

Our bold vision to transform health care is powered by our respect for our patients and our commitment to ensure everyone who comes through our doors has a positive experience.

You'll find a supportive work environment at BMC, with rich opportunities throughout your career for training, development, and growth and where you'll have the tools you need to take charge of your own practice environment.

***: Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous smooth muscle tumors that affect 26 million women nationwide and are estimated to cost the U.S. healthcare system between $ billion every year. Disproportionately impacting the health and well-being of Black women, fibroids can cause debilitating pain, heavy periods, pregnancy complications, and infertility. Black women are three times more likely to be diagnosed with uterine fibroids when compared to White women.

In addition, implicit racial bias within the healthcare system has been directly linked to delivery of lower quality care for Black patients.

This affects Black patients' decisions to seek care for symptomatic fibroids, providers' perceptions of their patients' pain and symptoms, and treatment options offered for fibroid management.

We established the Fibroid Center at BMC to provide exceptional care to patients with uterine fibroids through a multidisciplinary, patient-centered, and evidence-based approach.

Earlier in 2022, we implemented the inaugural cohort of Centering(patients with)Fibroids (CPWF).

Preliminary data from our first cohort highlighted the importance of promoting shared decision making among providers and patients needing uterine fibroid treatment.

The aims of this research project are:

  • To develop and implement a shared decision-making (SDM) tool for the management of uterine fibroids
  • To assess provider level and patient level factors associated with successful implementation of a SDM tool for uterine fibroids in a clinical setting.

  • Coordinate and conduct patients, providers, and community partner interviews for their feedback on our shared decisionmaking tool for symptomatic uterine fibroid management
  • Contribute to qualitative data management, coding, and analysis. Assists in data collection and provides feedback on study's progress.
  • Participate in poster and/or manuscript development and presentation of findings at scholarly conferences
  • Reviews the data collection forms for each enrollee for completion and quality; checks work of junior staff performing data entry to ensure timely and accurate entry. Provides technical guidance to junior staff.
