Boston Medical Center (BMC) is a private, not-for-profit, 514-bed, academic medical center located in Boston’s historic South End. The hospital is the primary teaching affiliate for Boston University School of Medicine. BMC emphasizes community-based care, with its mission to provide consistently accessible health services to all. The largest safety net hospital in New England, BMC provides the full spectrum of pediatric and adult care, from primary care and family medicine to advanced specialty care. BMC is the largest and busiest provider of trauma and emergency services in New England. The Emergency Department had 133,528 visits last year.

With more than 25,840 admissions and 1,149,226 patient visits in the last year, BMC provides a comprehensive range of in- and outpatient, clinical, and diagnostic services in more than 70 medical specialties and subspecialties, including cardiac care, neurological care, orthopedics, geriatrics, women’s health, and pediatrics.

Unwavering in its commitment to serve the community, Boston Medical Center is dedicated to providing accessible health care. Approximately 57 percent of patients come from underserved populations, such as the low-income and elderly, who rely on government payors such as Medicaid, the Health Safety Net, and Medicare for their coverage; 32 percent do not speak English as a primary language. BMC offers numerous outreach services, including cholesterol tests, blood pressure screenings, osteoporosis screenings, eye exams, and smoking cessation counseling. Cancer screening, education, and prevention seminars are offered in the community, and youth outreach workers are trained for involvement in schools and health fairs. BMC also offers a wide range of programs to serve social needs, including the Preventive Food Pantry, the Violence Intervention Advocacy Program, and the Elders Living at Home program.

Mission

For more than 100 years, Boston Medical Center has been driven by a commitment to care for all people, providing not only traditional medical care, but also programs and services that wrap around that care to enhance overall health. All of this supports our mission to provide exceptional care, without exception.

Vision

Our vision is to make Boston the healthiest urban population in the world by 2030. This internal benchmark sets the tone for our growth and a successful future and drives our culture, activities, and strategy.

Values

Three cornerstone values drive BMC’s pursuit to deliver exceptional care without exception, guiding our beliefs, behaviors, and decision making along the way.

1. Built on Respect, Powered by Empathy: We care about our patients, employees, and community — and we’re committed to doing right by them each and every day.

2. Move Mountains: Impossibility doesn’t live here. Instead, we’re motivated by what can be — and we’ll move mountains to make it happen.

3. Many Faces Create Our Greatness: Diversity is our heart and soul — and when it comes to inclusion, we’re all in.

Each of those values helps us deliver a promise that we make to ourselves and to our community: By 2030, BMC aims to make Boston the healthiest urban population in the world. With respect, empathy, diversity, and a move-mountains mentality, we’re excited to see that ambitious goal become long-lasting reality.
