    Duties and Responsibilities

    * *Under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), fulfill the deliverables associated with implementing the MALAMA (Mini Ahupua'a for Lifestyle and Mea'Ai through Aquaponics) intervention in Native Hawaiian community sites, including maintaining ongoing communication with participants, assisting with the development of data collection protocols, and coordinating the logistical details of the intervention workshops.
    * *Develop health educational intervention materials, such as handouts, videos, etc, for the MALAMA intervention.
    * *Coordinate quantitative and qualitative data collection, entry, management, and analysis using computer software.
    * *Supervise student volunteers and provide guidance on community-based research protocols and design.
    * *Search and summarize the research literature associated with nutrition, gardening, food production, indigenous methodologies, family-based interventions.
    * *Draft project reports and dissemination products including research manuscripts and conference presentations.

    • Present findings to academic and community partners.
    • Prepare IRB (Institutional Review Board) applications and consent forms, and design data collection instruments.
    • Assist with quantitative and qualitative data analyses using computer software (NVivo, STATA, SPSS, etc.).
    • Manage fiscal and administrative of the project needs to fulfill deliverables.
    • Work independently with minimal supervision.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Social Work, Hawaiian and Pacific Studies, Public Health or related field and 5 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for conducting community-engaged research and/or delivering educational programming with Native Hawaiian communities; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
    • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of community-engaged research and/or delivering educational programming with Native Hawaiian communities as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
    • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with conducting community-engaged research and/or delivering educational programming with Native Hawaiian communities including IRB and National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines.
    • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
    • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
    • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
    • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software.
    • If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
    • Familiarity and experience with Native Hawaiian cultural practices.
    • Familiarity with aquaponics systems.
    • Experience in building and maintaining home aquaponics systems.
    Desirable Qualifications


    • At least three years of experience conducting community-engaged research and/or delivering educational programming in Waimanalo with evidence of trust and relationships with the community.
    • Experience working with Native Hawaiian youth and families.
    • Experience authoring peer-reviewed publications and conferences.
    • Experience with graphic and cultural arts.
    • Knowledge of the Waimanalo community.
    • Ability to communicate in 'olelo Hawai'i.
    • Record of publications and scientific conference presentations.
