    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Serve as the Hawaiian Rare Plant Program director. Secure and safeguard germplasm of Hawai?i's at risk, threatened, and endangered native flowering and pteridophyte taxa, and Polynesian cultural taxa at the HRPP.
    • Conduct intensive exploratory research and strategic planning for the advancement of ex situ Hawaiian plant germplasm conservation.
    • Direct the research, development and day-to-day service operations of the HRPP.
    • Plan, organize and direct programmatic activities and render committee, consultative, or lecturing services to academic, civic or professional organizations for the purpose of reporting, instruction, information dissemination, and/or the promotion of plant conservation and germplasm preservation.
    • Develop/maintain cooperative relationships and agreements with other Lyon departments, various University of Hawai?i colleges/departments and other academic institutions, botanic institutions, government regulatory and land management agencies, conservation and local community organizations, plant conservation initiatives, and private industry.
    • Seek extramural funding through fundraising opportunities, grant writing and contracts.
    • Support educational and outreach activities of the Lyon Arboretum.
    • Supervise the HRPP personnel, students, and volunteers.
    • Become a Cooperating Graduate Faculty Member with one or more departments on the main UH campus, and supervise graduate students through those departments.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Lyon Arboretum director.

    Assistant Specialist (S3) Minimum Qualifications:

    • An earned MS or PhD in Botany, Biology, or a relevant field from a college or university of recognized standing.
    • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in ex situ plant conservation, including administration and management of germplasm collections.
    • Demonstrated research productivity, through evidence of a sustained track record of research accomplishments in conducting or assisting in assigned or independent research and/or major projects in a field directly related to plant conservation.
    • Extensive knowledge and competency in the science behind ex situ germplasm conservation, such as curation, processes involved in the banking of seeds and/or living plants/plant tissue (in vitro and cryopreservation), propagation, and germination techniques.
    • Demonstrated ability to raise funds, and implement and manage simultaneous projects.
    • Demonstrated ability to connect and collaborate with diverse constituencies, and possession of strong communication and advocacy skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize assigned activities through leadership of subordinates, management of work priorities, and management of employee relations.
    Associate Specialist (S4) Minimum Qualifications

    In Addition to S3 Minimum Qualifications:

    • An earned PhD in Botany, Biology, or a relevant field from a college or university of recognized standing.
    • A minimum of four (4) years of experience in ex situ plant conservation, including a minimum of two (2) years of program administration and management of germplasm collections.
    • Demonstrated research productivity, through evidence of a sustained track record of research accomplishments in conducting independent research and/or major projects in a field directly related to plant conservation.
    Specialist (S5) Minimum Qualifications

    In Addition to S4 Minimum Qualifications:

    • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in ex situ plant conservation, including a minimum of three (3) years of program administration and management of germplasm collections.

    Desirable Qualifications:

    • Familiarity with the flora of the Pacific Islands; preferably knowledge of the native Hawaiian flora.
    • Experience in tropical ecosystems preferably as it pertains to islands.
    • Working knowledge and understanding of applicable international, federal, and state laws, rules, regulations and administrative processes related to threatened and endangered plant taxa.
    • Service experience productivity evidenced by service in related conferences, professional journals, and in higher education instruction.
    • Evidence supervising independent student study/research activities

    To begin approximately January 1, 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Lyon Arboretum is an Organized Research Unit at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

    Lyon's Hawaiian Rare Plant Program (HRPP) is a research and gene bank curatorial program that serves as the primary ex situ native Hawaiian plant germplasm repository for the State of Hawai'i, and represents one of the major means by which the Lyon Arboretum contributes to plant conservation.

    The mission of the HRPP is to prevent further extinction of native Hawaiian plant species and Polynesian introduced crop plants, to propagate plants for approved restoration projects and garden use, and to initiate and maintain an ex situ germplasm collection of the critically endangered Hawaiian plants.

    The HRPP works cooperatively, in joint conservation efforts with other botanical gardens, various state and federal agencies, and other environmental conservation organizations and land managers.

    The HRPP Seed, Micropropagation, and Cryopreservation Conservation Laboratories collectively bank >33 million seeds, and >30,000 in-vitro living plant collections, representing >600 native Hawaiian plant taxa.
