Job Summary:
Under the general direction of the Director of Collections, the Exhibitions Manager works collaboratively across the museum to successfully oversee the full lifecycle of special exhibitions at the Honolulu Museum of Art (HoMA).
The Exhibitions Manager develops strategies for and leads the production of multiple exhibition installation projects through conception, realization, and post-production in support of HoMA's annual exhibition schedule.
The Honolulu Museum of Art:
Opened in 1927, the Honolulu Museum of Art is a home for art and education created for the benefit of the entire community.
Founder Anna Rice Cooke envisioned a museum that would bring people together through the power of art and "the deep intuitions that are common to all." The museum was conceived of as a place of meaningful exchange and dialogue, celebrating the diverse artistic and cultural traditions of Hawai'i's multi-ethnic population.
From this founding intention grew the museum of today, with a world-class encyclopedic collection of more than 55,000 works of art, representing a stunning breadth of places and eras, from all corners of the globe and from the ancient past to the present day.
Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in museum studies or related field or equivalent experience in exhibition or project management.
Five years of professional project management experience in a cross-department context, with at least three years of work with exhibitions and/or collections.
Well-developed knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in project planning, production, and management, preferably in a professional museum or cultural heritage institution.
Exceptional interpersonal, communication and consultation skills, both orally and n writing.Sound knowledge of collections and exhibitions management practice in a museum context.
Well-developed organizational and coordination skills.
Well-developed computer skills including MS Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
Well-developed knowledge and experience of budget development and control.
Experience in leading cross-department work groups in a diplomatic and analytical manner.
Honesty, integrity, enthusiasm, perspective, and a strong work ethic supported by commitment and follow-through.
Ability to work within and support a diverse community of visitors, artists, and employees.
Desired Qualifications:
Master's degree in museum studies, art history, or related field, or equivalent experience in exhibition or project management.
Experience in grant writing, database management, and/or collections policy creation and management.
Experience in a museum environment or nonprofit organization with multiple sites and varying degrees of need.
Understanding of Honolulu Museum of Art's established identity and dedication to advancing it.
Manages the planning and implementation of multiple and complex exhibition projects from conception to realization through resolution.
Leads project teams and manages project schedules across the museum, ensuring milestones and deadlines are met and that information is shared in a timely manner.
Oversees and regularly updates the museum's exhibition calendar and sets the agenda for exhibition meetings.Liaises with curators, artists, couriers, and contractors to realize the timely completion of exhibition-related work.
Develops detailed budgets for exhibition projects, including researching project requirements in consultation with curatorial and collections colleagues, external suppliers, and events staff.
Works with HoMA Registrar to negotiate and manage artist agreements, exhibition contracts, and loan agreements.Ensures continued compliance with all contractual stipulations such as transportations schedules, sponsorship arrangements, fee payments, image usages, credit lines, and final reports.
Participates in the development, revision, implementation, and communication of museum and departmental policies, procedures, and documentation.Keeps current with issues, best practices, and standards of the museum profession; conforms to professional ethical standards for the museum and the collections field.
Attends and participates in professionally relevant meetings and conferences.As necessary, assists colleagues in the development of government grants and other potential funding proposals.
Acts as a resource to front of house staff to communicate schedules, policies, procedures, and events related to exhibitions.
Other duties as assigned.
Compensation
The Honolulu Museum of Art is committed to practicing salary transparency. The minimum salary for this position is
$65,000 per annum
and the maximum salary is
$70,000 per annum.
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting pay, including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Working Conditions and Atmosphere:
Works in an office environment. General office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm with flexible scheduling as needed. Ability to operate general office equipment including computer, copier, printers, fax machine, etc. Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, up to 25 lbs. of general office material or equipment. Ability to work some evening and weekend hours.
