- Start, monitor, and maintain all machinery.
- Support the Chief Engineer in all aspects.
- Handle mooring lines.
- Participate in Safety and Security drills as required.
- Ensure crew and passenger safety.
- Stand engine watches as needed.
- Be proficient in using fixed fire suppression systems.
- Assigned an IBA as a QMED.
- Complete 'Security Officer' training.
- Fill and pump fluids as necessary.
- Switch between Shore Power and Generator as required.
- Assist other departments upon request.
- Understand fueling procedures and spill prevention plans.
- Perform additional job duties as assigned.
- TSA TWIC.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- USCG MMD with QMED rating.
- USCG Assistant Engineer's License with suitable horsepower and route ratings preferred.
- Additional certifications recommended; Lifeboat, Firefighting, STCW.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Two years of qualified engine room experience.

The Qualified Member of the Engineering Department (QMED) must hold an MMD with a suitable QMED or Assistant Engineer's rating. They will collaborate closely with the Chief Engineer.
