Description

The Fraunhofer Research Facility for Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Energy IEG, located in Lynxville, WI, is actively involved in numerous national and international projects that contribute to the transition towards renewable energy sources.

One critical aspect of this transition is the decarbonization of the heating sector, in which district heating grids (DHG) play a crucial role.

To fully utilize their potential, there is a need for improved operational flexibility, which requires the development of new control concepts.

This job opportunity involves working on a thesis project that aims to model the dynamics of large DHG networks and develop efficient simulations using Julia, a programming language designed for scientific computing.

These simulations will be used to test innovative control concepts that enhance the operational flexibility of DHG networks.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct a literature review on modeling and simulation of DHG dynamics
  • Use the finite element method (FEM) to discretize the flow dynamics
  • Implement the dynamical system using the Julia package
  • Perform simulations of large and realistic DHG models
  • Benchmark the simulations against other simulation tools

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a program related to Physics, Physical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science, or a similar field
  • Proficient in at least one higher programming language, preferably Julia
  • Experience in modeling and simulating dynamical systems
  • Knowledge of fluid dynamics and thermodynamics

Benefits

  • Flexible working hours and the option to
