- Provides direct patient care and completes other duties as assigned by Manager or Director.
- Identifies learning needs of respiratory care staff at UCMC. Responsible for coordinating education for clinical practices and practical application for department staff. Responsible for developing, facilitating, teaching respiratory staff, nursing and school of medicine as requested. Assures new staff orientation, precepting, competency needs and provides one-on-one instruction in classroom, laboratory, and patient care settings. Teaches, demonstrates, and re-enforces clinical practices. Works well with other hospital educators, clinical nurse specialists and physicians. Evaluates educational activities and modifies programs as needed.
- Develops and utilizes available resources in providing for the educational needs of staff by: assist staff therapists in their professional growth and competence. Consults with peers and constituent groups to provide most effective learning techniques for audience and clinical goals. Employs principles of adult learning, preceptorship, and curriculum building skills to assure sufficient opportunity for staff to complete required and elective educational offerings. Works with department Director, Manager, Assistant Managers, Coordinators and Medical Directors to coordinate planning and documentation of educational activities, appropriately utilizing resources of the department.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- A Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Care, Education, Science, or Management
- A minimum of 4 years respiratory care experience in a progressive healthcare environment
- An active certification as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from the National Board for Respiratory Care
- A current Respiratory Care Practitioner license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to obtain said license prior to start
- An active Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification from the American Heart Association
- Previous experience in specialty area, classroom teaching and program development meeting Joint Commission standards for competency processes
- Demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning by advancing one's knowledge base as evidenced by teaching, education, certification, and professional development
- A Master's degree
- Previous supervisory or lead therapist experience
- AARC Preceptor Course completion
- An active member of the American Association for Respiratory Care
- Adult Critical Care Specialist (ACCS) certification from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)
- Neonatal-Pediatric Specialist (NPS) certification from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)

The Respiratory Care Education & Operations Coordinator position provides professional education services for Respiratory Care Practitioners and other healthcare providers as appropriate. Responsible for the assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of education that assures clinical practice standards for Respiratory Care. Recognized as a clinical expert in all areas as defined by the Respiratory Care Practice Act and is assigned to coordinate and/or provide staff learning needs for orientation, in-service training, competency processes, and program development for existing and new services. Acts as a liaison between patients, providers, and provides direct patient care. Acts to promote and advocate for the advancement of evidenced based clinical practices for Respiratory Care Services, assists with developing Policy & Procedure for standards of care, contributes to performance improvement surveillance, develops curriculum, presents at lectures and conferences. Acts as shift Charge RT as needed.
