    The Work You Will Do:


    The Environmental Manager-SES, , is in the Division of Environmental Assessment and Restoration's Chemistry Program, Nutrients section, in Tallahassee and will be responsible for managing a subset of chemistries and team members within the nutrients group.

    The manager serves as technical expert in the area of responsibility and reviews, troubleshoots, and approves analytical data critical for the assessment of water quality and restoration projects for the State of Florida.

    The Division of Environmental Assessment and Restoration (DEAR) is charged with protecting, maintaining, and improving the quality of Florida's springs, rivers, lakes, estuaries, and coastal waters.

    DEAR team members provide the department and other resource agencies with the highest quality laboratory services available; provide technical support to the department and the public regarding water quality analysis and data quality assurance (QA); manage water quality data repositories for data storage and use by the department, other agencies and the public; and work together to monitor and assess Florida's surface water and groundwater quality, develop strategies to reduce pollution, and work closely with local stakeholders to implement comprehensive restoration strategies that improve the lives of all Floridians and preserve aquatic resources for generations to come.

    The work location of this position is in Tallahassee (Leon County), Florida. The city hosts the Capital of Florida and is the seat of the state government.

    Your Specific Responsibilities:


    While executing the duties of this position, the incumbent is expected at all times to be aware of and abide by the Department's Standards of Conduct, as well as any and all departmental and/or work unit rules, directives, policies, procedures, and/or general orders applicable to performing the duties of this position.

    If the position is supervisory, the incumbent is also expected to actively support and work toward fulfilling the Agency's Affirmative Action objectives.

    The incumbent of this position serves as a manager within the Nutrients group under the Chemistry Program.

    The duties of this position involve managerial work directing the efforts of professional and technical staff analyzing environmental samples for nutrients, anions and other related compounds or contaminants of interest to agency programs.


    Manages human resources as directed and assists with the resolution of any personnel issues that may arise within the assigned area of responsibility.

    Directly supervises the human resource-related activities of the subordinate positions indicated on this position description.

    Serves as liaison to the environmental administrator for all human resource-related issues within the assigned work area. Makes recommendations for hiring and disciplinary actions as needed. Makes recommendations to maintain sufficient staffing levels for efficient and effective laboratory operations.

    The incumbent is responsible for the efficient implementation of analytical production schedules and methodological protocols for the assigned areas. Coordinates all analytical production and methodological activities with the administrator for the Nutrients group. Provides customer support and answers inquiries pertaining to inorganic analyses and other aspects of the laboratory's work.

    Reviews and develops laboratory Standard Operating Procedures in an efficient and timely manner.

    Conducts group internal reviews to ensure all analytical protocols are performed as required, quality objectives are met, and meta data are documented as required.

    Investigates and suggests resolutions to problems identified by sub-standard performance on quality control measurements. Reports findings of all

    investigations to the environmental administrator in a timely manner. Implements problem resolutions and corrective action resulting from internal and external audits as directed. Assists with all activities within the assigned area of responsibility that are associated with laboratory's certification program.


    Manages the day-to-day implementation of production schedules for the nutrients group and analytical efforts of junior staff in a collaborative and efficient manner to meet turnaround goals.

    Documents progress through the preparation of reports as directed. Authorizes analytical data on the nutrients job level in a timely manner to satisfy production demands and deadlines. Supports senior staff in the authorization of analytical data on the test level and troubleshooting of instrumentation as needed.

    Stays abreast of developing analytical technology and evaluates new equipment and methodologies. Ensures assigned validation and research projects are completed in a timely manner. Participates in the preparation of publications submitted to professional journals and presents findings at scientific meetings.

    Makes purchasing recommendations for equipment and expenses. Prepares purchase requests for supply and equipment requisitions according to protocol. Monitors that equipment and supplies are efficiently and effectively utilized.

    Assists in development, implementation, and management of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Assists in the interfacing of laboratory instrumentation to the LIMS. Assists in the purchase, design, and implementation of software tools to manage the section's data stream.


    Provides environmental chemical consulting services to agency programs as needed; Makes presentations to the public and other agencies; Provides expert testimony as needed; This position participates in the afterhours laboratory freezer/refrigerator alarm monitoring on a rotating basis.

    Performs other related duties as directed.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Minimum Qualifications


    Requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in environmental sciences, natural sciences, biological sciences, physical sciences, engineering sciences, engineering, or computer science from an accredited university or college and four years of verifiable related experience, of which at least one year is as a supervisor, coordinator, project manager, program manager, team lead, team trainer, or a completed related managerial/leadership training; or any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described above, for a total of eight years.

    The incumbent of this position, in accordance with sections and 435.04, Florida Statutes and DEP Directive 422, Background Investigations, is required to successfully complete a background and fingerprint check.
