Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Attorney III - Performs highly complex (Senior-level) legal work. Work involves overseeing and planning
legal activities, preparing legal documents, interpreting laws and regulations, and rendering legal advice
and counsel to local election officials throughout the State of Texas and to the general public. May
supervise the work of others. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of
initiative and independent judgment

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
telephone and in writing.
Draft administrative rules for the Texas Register to implement election laws.
Draft and track legislation relating to election laws.
Conduct election schools and make educational presentations concerning the Texas election laws.
Draft and render legal opinions.
Confer with and advise interested parties and their attorneys on election-related legal matters.
Perform related work as assigned such as preparing handbooks, brochures, and forms.
Review election materials translated into Spanish for content and tone, if bilingual.
Assist the Office of the Attorney General Office (OAG) in preparing cases for trial.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and Education
Experience in legal work. Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
Member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas. Must be licensed to practice law for a minimum
of 6 years with at least 2 years of experience in election law, local government. Law clerk or similar
experience can be counted toward the legal experience. Legal research and writing experience as a
licensed attorney.

Additionally, this position requires:

Licensure
Must currently be licensed to practice law in the State of Texas.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

This position requires demonstrated skill in:

  • legal research, writing, and analysis; and
- use of personal computers, word processing software including Microsoft Word and Excel, and

Adobe Acrobat.

This position requires demonstrated ability to:

  • analyze complex legal problems and interpret laws and regulations; and
- communicate legal opinions in an understandable and usable manner; and
- work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment; and
- provide excellent customer service; and
- manage multiple priorities.


MINIMUM PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of Texas Election Law.
Legislative experience.
Experience speaking before a public audience.
Ability to speak Spanish
