    Max McGee Diabetes Research Center

The Max McGee Research Center conducts groundbreaking research to better understand what causes type 1 diabetes and how we might prevent it.

Diabetes is a life-changing diagnosis for kids and their families.

Here in Wisconsin, where children are diagnosed at twice the national rate, it's especially critical to have leading-edge care that helps families manage this lifelong disease.

The Max McGee Research Center is closely affiliated with the nationally ranked diabetes program at CW which treats over 2,000 children and adolescents with types 1 and 2 diabetes and the Center for Microbiome Research.

Our goal is to provide outstanding, individualized care that lowers the risk of complications and enhances quality of life for the whole family.

The Center focuses on using state of the art analysis platforms to better understand the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes with a strong emphasis on translational research.

The objectives of the scientists and clinicians affiliated with the Center are to improve the quality of life of type 1 diabetes patients through:

    • Understanding the genetic basis of Type 1 Diabetes and defining its phenotypic heterogeneity
    • Understanding the immunological processes and environmental contributors underlying autoimmunity against the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas
    • Defining better biomarkers for type 1 diabetes to identify those at risk and monitor those undergoing therapeutic intervention
    • Pursuing objectives with the conviction that our efforts will improve patient care and contribute to curing juvenile diabetes.
    • Integrating immunological resources around emerging needs in clinical care that will constitute the personalized healthcare of tomorrow
    • Coordinating immunological research investment capacity by coordinating Center communications and interactions

    About Children's Research Institute

Children's Research Institute (CRI) was formed in 2004 with the focus of investing in bench to bedside research for the pediatric population to prevent disease, improve outcomes, and help kids and families manage living with chronic conditions.

Through the CRI, Children's annual investment in pediatric research is approximately $15-17 million.

Children's Research Institute provides research infrastructure through shared service cores, nursing research, pilot grants, and administrative supplements for K-type grants awarded to pediatric investigators.

CRI-supported shared service cores include flow cytometry, aquatics (zebrafish), histology, tissue banking, microscopic imaging, biostatistics, and a hospital-based pediatric translational research unit.

Biostatistics support is provided through the section of Quantitative Health Sciences and includes support in study design, database development, and data analysis.

Children's Pediatric Translational Research Unit provides dedicated research personnel and space for clinical research procedures.

In addition, Children's has a Nursing Research Department established to promote an evidence-based model of research to provide the best pediatric care possible.

The CRI laboratory building consists of nearly 100,000 square feet of wet lab space specifically for pediatric research. Pediatric researchers have facilitated access to an additional 120,000 square feet of vivarium and other support infrastructure.

Children's research space is located on the same campus as Children's Wisconsin and Medical College of Wisconsin to encourage rich, multidisciplinary collaboration for child health research.
